Your first visit is spent at Giraffe Manor in Nairobi which is closely associated with the nearby Giraffe Centre. The grounds of your hotel serve as a grazing area for a herd of rare Rothschild Giraffe. So while you are enjoying afternoon tea with these magnificent creatures wandering free around you, you can also be assured that the centre is operating a successful breeding and conservation program to secure the future of these wonderful animals and is busy working on reintroducing them to the wild to build up what was a severely dwindling population. Profits from the hotel go directly to the centre.

Kenya is home to some wonderful national parks and it is essential that they are maintained and preserved so that future generations can enjoy them. Often the entry fees are put towards the conservation practices of the park and this is certainly true of Laikipia.

By visiting the Laikipia Plateau, you are helping to continue the work of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum. Their work includes wildlife conservation, forest management, water resources and managing the impact of tourism on the local area. Thanks to their efforts the numbers of endangered animals within the reserve continues to rise and flourish. They also work closely with, and employ, local people to ensure that their way of life remains protected.

People

Born from one family’s passion for Kenya and its wilderness, the DSWT is one of the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation programs in the world and one of the pioneering conservation organisations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa.

Founded in 1977 by Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick D.B.E, in honour of the memory of her late husband, famous naturalist and founding Warden of Tsavo East National Park, David Leslie William Sheldrick MBE, the DSWT claims a rich and deeply rooted family history in wildlife and conservation. You can visit the DSWT while in Nairobi where you will have the chance to gain valuable insight into the work Daphne and her team are undertaking.
