New Zealand
We reckon this is one of the world’s most exciting holiday destinations.
Solo travel
Responsible Travel was built out of a love of solo travel, and we want to share the joy of it with you.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Our 'A New Zealand Fantasy' itinerary incorporates environmentally sustainable practices and education on regenerative travel. New Zealand itself is a world leader in sustainability, with 32% of its land area and 10% of the coastal marine environment in protected areas. We prioritize NZ activity operators, accommodations, and transportation companies who expose clients to a breadth of ecotourism commitments in practice. On day 1, we'll explore Auckland's coastline aboard the Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari -- a research-based marine mammal experience where passengers participate in interactive scientific research activities and learn about NZ's marine ecosystem. Accompanying us on that tour will be our community partner -- Project Jonah. In operation since 1974, Project Jonah has played a key role in marine mammal rescue, protection and public education. Their participation alongside AWADS expert staff will give our clients an in-depth understanding of ocean conservation and marine mammal protection in New Zealand. A portion of trip sales are donated to Project Jonah as well.

Throughout the itinerary, we will experience much of New Zealand's incredible natural offerings -- from hot springs, geothermal parks, pristine mountain landscapes, extensive cave systems, and sprawling coastlines. While enjoying these stunning surroundings, we will be learning about the efforts of the government, communities, and private companies that have kept them in pristine condition and will continue to do so.

In addition to ensuring local and sustainably produced foods in our included meals and restaurant selections, when we buy snacks for the road we prioritize fresh and unique local bites. As well, on all of our trips, we focus on reduction of plastic and make sure that water is available for refilling personal reusable water bottles while also helping to ensure waste is recycled whenever possible.

People

Our New Zealand itinerary prioritizes a thorough understanding of local Maori culture, it's roots, traditions, beliefs and lasting impact on NZ's national character. On our visit to a traditional Maori village guests will partake in a Maori welcome ceremony, complete with Haka, Waka, Hangi dinner, traditional dances and other cultural education while our guests stay overnight in a traditional Marae.

Our itinerary will also leave participants with a well-rounded perspective on NZ's unique historical influences -- both social and environmental -- throughout the years. Guests will experience an in-depth tour of Christchurch, bearing witness to the rebuild of a major Western city from red-zone demolitions. We will also explore the under-visited region of Akaroa in NZ which speaks to the history of French settlements and their cultural influence in the area.

Lastly, as on all our trips, we focus on locally owned suppliers including our boutique hotels, local guides, activity providers, and restaurants. Our native NZ-guides who are with us throughout the itinerary will supply unique insight into the history, culture, and character of New Zealand, as will each local vendor we carefully selected. We believe in providing a sound understanding of the local culture and community for a truly immersive travel experience, and there is no better way to get that than through the eyes of a local.
