Description of Sao Miguel holiday in the Azores
Discover São Miguel beyond the postcard viewpoints on a seven-night journey through volcanic landscapes, local food, walking trails and island traditions.
This holiday is designed for travellers who want to understand the island itself. You’ll stand above enormous crater lakes formed by ancient eruptions, walk through forests and rural landscapes shaped by volcanic soil, soak in naturally heated thermal pools and see how geothermal activity still influences daily life in Furnas.
The island’s culture is woven through the journey rather than treated as a separate sightseeing stop. In Ponta Delgada, a guided food and cultural tour introduces you to the city through its streets, stories and flavours, with tastings of local produce and regional specialities along the way. In Furnas, you’ll experience one of São Miguel’s most distinctive traditions with a cozido lunch cooked slowly underground using natural volcanic heat.
A full-day guided walk gives you time to experience the island at a completely different pace, away from the main roads and viewpoints, while your local guide brings the landscape to life through its geology, plants, history and rural traditions.
You’ll also spend a full day exploring Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and Caldeira Velha, moving from vast volcanic calderas and high crater viewpoints to lush forest and warm geothermal pools.
Just as importantly, the week includes free time. Rather than filling every day from morning to night, there is space to wander Ponta Delgada, sit in a café, revisit somewhere you loved or simply enjoy being on the island without a timetable.
There is no whale watching included as standard. This is deliberately a land-focused São Miguel holiday for travellers who are drawn to volcanic scenery, walking, food and local culture. We also offer tailor-made holidays if you would like to combine culture with more adventurous or ocean-based activities.
Your stay is based in a characterful four-star hotel in central Ponta Delgada, chosen for its local feel and easy access to the historic centre, restaurants and waterfront. Boutique and historic-property upgrades are also available.

CARBON REDUCTIONThis holiday is based in Ponta Delgada for the full seven nights, so guests do not need to hire a car to follow the itinerary. Transport for the included island experiences is organised as part of the guided programme, while the central location makes it easy to explore much of Ponta Delgada on foot during free time.
One full day of the programme is dedicated to exploring São Miguel on foot, with the walking route selected according to local conditions and the preferred level of challenge.
We avoid describing the holiday as “carbon neutral”, “low carbon” or “eco-friendly”. Instead, we focus on practical choices within the itinerary, including a single accommodation base, shared guided transport and experiences that allow significant parts of the island to be explored on foot.
ENVIRONMENT AND LANDSCAPE
São Miguel’s natural environment is central to this holiday, and the guided experiences are designed not simply to show visitors the scenery but to help them understand how the island was formed and how its landscapes continue to change.
Local guides introduce guests to the volcanic geology and natural environment of Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo, Caldeira Velha and Furnas. At Caldeira Velha there is also an interpretation centre where visitors can learn more about the area’s geology, biodiversity and geothermal activity.
The full-day walk takes place on established routes, with the local team selecting an appropriate trail according to weather and ground conditions. Guests are expected to follow their guide and respect marked routes and protected areas rather than leaving trails unnecessarily.
Furnas also provides an opportunity to learn about the relationship between people and the volcanic landscape, including geothermal activity, the traditionally prepared cozido lunch and the long-running work around the Furnas Lake landscape.

LOCAL ECONOMY AND CULTUREThis itinerary deliberately puts local food, guides and traditions alongside São Miguel’s landscapes rather than treating culture as an optional extra.
The Ponta Delgada food and cultural tour is led locally and combines the history of the city with tastings of Azorean foods and drinks. The Furnas experience includes a traditional cozido lunch, while the route through the island also introduces guests to São Miguel’s tea-growing countryside.
The majority of the holiday experiences are delivered by Azores-based guides and activity providers, meaning that a substantial part of the holiday cost remains within the destination through accommodation, guiding, transfers, restaurants and locally operated excursions.
Our accommodation choices also favour properties with a strong connection to the destination where suitable. For this holiday we use a characterful central four-star hotel, with upgrades available to smaller boutique and restored historic properties.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
We work with guides and tourism businesses based in the Azores, providing customers with local knowledge while supporting people whose livelihoods are directly connected to tourism on the islands.
We also try to make the programme as inclusive as the activities reasonably allow. The guided walking route can be selected according to the guest’s preferred level of challenge and current trail conditions rather than using one fixed route for everybody.
Dietary requirements are passed to our local partners in advance, particularly for the food tour and included lunches. Vegetarian diets can normally be accommodated, while guests with allergies, vegan diets or other specific requirements are encouraged to tell us before booking so we can check the arrangements properly.
Some experiences involve uneven natural terrain, hills, steps and geothermal bathing areas, so we ask guests with mobility or other accessibility requirements to speak to us before booking. We would rather give clear, individual advice about what will and will not work than describe an itinerary as universally accessible when it is not.
