1 Reviews of Laos and Cambodia tailor made tour
4 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Animals - buffalo and elephants in Laos. Hero rats in Cambodia. The mountains in Laos were stunning. Lovely views from river. Cambodian temples - especially those in more remote jungle locations. Lunches with our guide and friend Kia in Cambodia
Our guide in Laos. Gardens in Laos. Hotel Pavillon d’ Orient in Siem Reap. The people of Cambodia.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Avoid travelling by road in Laos. Use river and/or railway. Visit buffalo farm.
Nam Kat Yorla Pa - you’ll see more nature walking along the cycle path than the sky bridges. Kuang Si Waterfall is so full with Chinese tourists it’s probably not worth a visit. Go to the elephant sanctuary. Nong Khiaw is fun but aimed at backpackers.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Only a bit and only because we worked hard with our guide to buy from the people and used restaurants away from the hotel and from markets not tourist shops. Without a guide we wouldn’t know the difference. There were half hearted attempts at “eco” hotels but they were mostly pretend. The forest was protected- but you could book zip wire and 4x4. The hotels wrapped goods prettily but they were full of single use plastic. We were pleased to support animal sanctuaries and visit rural locations - but boats were filthy diesel and we struggled to avoid plastic bottles. We definitely worried about our environmental impact in huge cars- partly our fault for choosing luxury hotels on the whole. We did support animals but I can’t see how we helped much. More harm than good.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Mostly excellent with brilliant organisation. Our guides were absolutely superb.
I’d like the holiday company to put more pressure on hotels and venues to be genuinely eco friendly. They don’t really get it. We are in love with Cambodia. I would return. Laos is so hard though. I definitely would not travel by car again there unless I had to. It’s too much. I’m not sure I understood how hot it is this time of year having previously travelled in July. It was a bit grim at 40 degrees! We would love more opportunities to walk and explore but these were pretty limited and the heat made it worse.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Our local team in South Asia including in Laos and Cambodia are taking environmental responsibility very seriously. There is a growing availability of properties now in South East Asia actively seeking to reduce waste by offering water to guests in glass bottles or by offering filtered tap water to their guests. Our local team supports TAP Travelers Against Plastic – a United States based non-profit organization. TAP aims to educate travellers on the importance of using reusable water containers instead of buying and using plastic bottles. It is better for the traveller, the people they visit and for the planet. Our local team also support Plant A Tree Today (PATT) is a UK registered charity and a foundation operating throughout the Southeast Asia region. PATT initiates, develops and manages large-scale reforestation projects countering deforestation and climate change. Our local team also follow ‘best practices’ aligned with PATA guidelines and ACES, Asian Captive Elephant Standards with regard to the use of elephants four tourism related purposes in South Asia.
Our local team are travel life certified throughout all operations in South and South East Asia clearly demonstrating the commitment to sustainability.
People
Our local team also operates an independent charity arm founded as far back as 2007, set up in order to help conservation efforts and disadvantaged communities in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Cambodia in a responsible way. There are ongoing People and Planet projects in each individual country managed by local ambassadors collaborating with international partners, NGOs and local project coordinators and all donations go to beneficiary project. Our tours in Laos and Cambodia operate solely with local guides providing a vital source of revenue for local people. Many experiences on tour also provide revenue for local people such as meals in local homes which is a great way to learn about the local culture through the medium of food.
This tour is operated only on a private basis and we do not send large groups into the countries we operate in keeping our local impact as low as possible.
Our local team also are heavily involved in the Child Safe Tourism campaign which aims to empower travellers with knowledge and information on the simple actions to protect children and young people from danger and abuse in tourism areas. The Child Safe Tourism campaign seeks to combat the sexual abuse and exploitation of children in travel activities in developing countries, particularly in South East Asia.
