Description of Peru slow travel tour

Travel slow and you will see the true Peru. Whilst this trip takes in Peru’s highlights – Cusco and Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and Lima, you’ll also spend a full week in the Sacred Valley, and time in the Colca Canyon, too.

This tour gives you two full days in Lima, Peru’s capital. Here you have plenty of time to get to know the neighbourhoods on a walking tour of boho Barranco, and a private walking tour to take in the gastronomy scene of Peru. You’ll also have time to visit Arequipa, a regional capital in the south of the country, which sits on a high plateau between three towering volcanoes.

After visiting the cities, it’s time to see some of Peru’s famous natural landscapes – starting with nearby Colca Canyon. This is the second deepest valley in the world, watched over by Andean condors with three-metre wingspans. You’ll spend a couple of days in this ‘kingdom of the condor’ before Lake Titicaca, where you’ll swap your walking shoes for a kayak; you’ve got a lunch date on a man-made floating island with the members of the Uros community.

This trip gives you a lot of time to appreciate the Sacred Valley – not just for its historic landscape, but for its people too. You can spend a day with the Andean Misminay community and take part in a number of activities such as cooking, local adobe brick making or hiking.

Your Peru trip would be incomplete without experiencing the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu. On your holiday you can walk the one-day Inca Trail, where you'll do the final 12km of the Inca Trail to the Sun Gate, where you’ll get a great view of the site.

You’ll have time to explore Machu Picchu itself – before returning to the Sacred Valley for some free time to wind down after a thoroughly in depth and fascinating trip. This three week private tour can be adapted to suit you and your interests.

Peru luxury
A luxury holidays in Peru doesn't mean forgoing adventure; it means adventuring in style.
Peru
Here's how to travel like a local, including a handy section on food, shopping & people.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

By choosing a Slow Travel approach we have put environmentally-friendly tourism at the heart of our operations, encouraging people to make sure any trip to Peru is a fully immersive and meaningful adventure that also benefits the places we visit.

As well as the community-based initiatives mentioned in the ‘People” section, we also visit a reforestation project in the Sacred Valley, take walking and cycling tours in Lima, and kayak to the islands on Lake Titicaca rather than take the bustling tourist boats. Wherever we tread, we am to do it lightly and bring investment to conservation projects.

The trip is also designed to have just one domestic flights across the full three weeks of travel, and even this is only included because the drive would take to long. We also encourage our guests going forward to fly abroad on holiday less often, but when they do to stay for longer and travel in a eco-friendly manner.

People

This in-depth itinerary includes a unique full week in the Sacred Valley in order to fully immerse yourselves in community-based tourism initiatives. A day with the Misminay for example helps fund local education and health facilities, and provides direct income to prevent community members having to leave the area for other jobs, making it easier to also preserve their culture and traditions. Similarly we spend a day in an agricultural community, with money going directly into the pockets of the local small farmers and villagers who host us.

We handpick Peruvian-owned hotels (boutique independent ones where possible) to keep more money locally rather than going to international chains, and partner exclusively with a ground agent renowned for their ‘community first’ approach, where they collaborate directly with the locals on how they want tourism to operate in their own region. This results in a fairer, warmer, and more authentic experience.
