Visit the DSWT Orphanage and Nairobi Nursery Unit in Nairobi National Park. Nairobi Nursery’s is a special, time-honoured tradition in which the public are invited to learn more about the conservation work going on and meet the orphans in their care. There is also the opportunity to visit Nairobi National Park from the Nursery for more wildlife encounters. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is today the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world and one of the pioneering conservation organisations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa. To date the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has successfully hand-raised over 244 infant elephants and has accomplished its long-term conservation priority by effectively reintegrating orphans back into the wild herds of Tsavo, claiming many healthy wild-born calves from former-orphaned elephants raised in care.

The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Kenya (A.F.E.W. Kenya) also known as the Giraffe Centre is a non-governmental, non-profit making organization, which was founded to save the endangered Rothschild Giraffe, which had lost its natural habitat in Western Kenya to agriculture and there were only 130 left in the wild. At the Giraffe Centre, meet the Education officer and feed the Giraffes, visit the information centre for a short presentation on the organsiation and work going on. The Sands at Nomad has a dedicated 'Green Team' and Sustainability Manager, committed to eco-friendly projects and houses a Marine Education Center, a turtle hatchery in partnership with Diani Turtle Watch, and a five-acre organic farm. The 5-acre farm practices permaculture, producing organic food for Nomad's kitchen and rearing chickens for eggs. Bees pollinate crops for honey. The Sands promotes eco-friendliness with a paper and plastics initiative to combat ocean pollution, featuring recycled glass decor in the hotel and biodegradable paper straws at the Nomad restaurant.

People

We choose camps that embrace social responsibility and positive interactions with local communities. Tipilikwani Mara Camp is one example which supports the communities that live close to the location of all its camps. They have also developed a number of projects to benefit the surrounding communities and always ensure that a good number of staff are employed from these local communities.

Some of the local projects include:
• Supplying tree water from a bore hole which has resulted in the near eradication of typhoid in the Tipilikwani area in the Maasai Mara.
• Supporting a local school, through the funding of building projects.
• Supporting a local village in the Samburu area by displaying and marketing their artwork and fashion accessories, including bracelets, necklaces, beadwork, etc in our camps shops.
• Building a toilet block at the airstrip that serves the Samburu and Buffalo Springs National eco-system.

As well as this they encourage the connection and interaction of visitors with the local communities to promote inclusion and education. For centuries, the Maasai have embraced a nomadic lifestyle, coexisting harmoniously with the land. Guests staying at Tipilikwani Mara Camps can learn about the Masai people, having the opportunity through cultural visits to interact with these proud pastoralists and warriors, gaining insight into their traditions. Learn about their sustainable herding practices, witness their remarkable relationship with their livestock, and learn about their deep spiritual connection to nature. Experience their enchanting songs, beautiful and colourful adornment and clothing, and see how they are still living today in traditional huts.

The accommodation at Dinani beach has a Marine Education Center which welcomes local schools for educational visits about Kenya's marine life and conservation. Trips are funded by the Conservation Education Society and the Center. Students engage in activities led by the resident marine biologist and education manager.
