On this safari tour we use the Sarova Shaba and Lion Hill Game Lodges. These lodges have a dedicated environmental policy and making a contribution towards enhancing the planet and the lives of local communities has always been a key assignment since their inception. Grey water, which is wastewater generated from the kitchens and guest room showers is recycled and treated for reuse. This includes laundry use and irrigation in the organic gardens as well as watering the lush flora. Nutrients in the treated grey water such as phosphorus act as a plant's food source. Eco-smart rain showers designed to keep water waste to a minimum are installed in guest rooms.
Kitchen waste and food leftovers are converted into valuable end products such as organic fertilizer used in the in-house organic kitchen gardens. Sarova have adopted the use of glass water bottles and guests can rest assured that they no longer provide single-use plastic bottled water.
Of course, looking after our environment really should start at home. Our UK based office has an extremely low carbon footprint and we subscribe to a green energy only tariff. We are actively reducing the waste produced by our office and staff, no longer producing brochures or mailing leaflets and confirmations. Our offices have cycle locks and showers to encourage cycling to work and we offer staff a cycle to work scheme.

People

Your visit makes a real difference, bringing work to local drivers, guides and other staff. We and our partners believe in the social and economic empowerment of the local communities we visit on this safari. We and our partners know how important it is to leave money in the pockets of the local communities we operate from. Sarova Shaba and Lion Hill understand that the success of their lodges is attributed to the employment of locals who not only understand the geography of the locations but also have a buy-in on all of the ideas. They take pride in the passionate tour guides who narrate their experiences and explain in spectacular detail any curious wildlife query. The organic herb and vegetable gardens are also tended to by these very locals.
Sarova lodges also provide direct route-to-market channels, which include facilitating visits to cultural manyattas for guests to purchase artisanal merchandise. These same artisans are allowed to display their commodities within the lodges selling them directly to tourists. Their profits are pocketed for their families without any third-party costs.
Tree planting has been an active engagement for the Sarova group, keeping in line with the Kenya Government's requirement to restore and create forest cover by a minimum of 10%. They continue to partner with like-minded organisations towards this commitment.
