Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Your visit makes a real difference, bringing work to local drivers, guides and other staff. We and our partners believe in the social and economic empowerment of the local communities we visit on this safari. We and our partners know how important it is to leave money in the pockets of the local communities we operate from. Both Instinct of the Mara and Cardamom House are operated by the same group with impeccable environmental standards. While staying, all guests are encouraged to engage in their conservation work, anti-poaching and community efforts so that they understand the difference between a conservancy and national park, what conservation means, where their conservation fees go, the reality on the ground and hopefully leave as true advocates of wildlife and nature conservation.
The Instinct of the Mara has its own solar powered utilities, while Cardamom House’s architect had a profound passion for Swahili architecture and beauty of the wild jungle-like coast. To preserve the natural palms and vegetation, Cardamom House was designed around the existing nature, wildlife, textures and elements. Guests can rest assured that they no longer provide single-use plastic bottled water.
Of course, looking after our environment really should start at home. Our UK based office has an extremely low carbon footprint and we subscribe to a green energy only tariff. We are actively reducing the waste produced by our office and staff, no longer producing brochures or mailing leaflets and confirmations. Our offices have cycle locks and showers to encourage cycling to work and we offer staff a cycle to work scheme.

Your visit makes a real difference, bringing work to local drivers, guides and other staff. We and our partners believe in the social and economic empowerment of the local communities we visit on this safari. We and our partners know how important it is to leave money in the pockets of the local communities we operate from. Cultural education and exposure is important to us and our partners. Kenya is a colourful country with 43 tribes, yet only 2 are well known, one could even say, exploited. With our choice of lodges in Kenya, you are able to engage with at least 4 tribes – Pokomo, Orma, Taita and Maasai tribes. The local communities are part of every part of our partners business. They are shareholders, managers, waiters, rangers and part of every cog in the wheel that it takes to run the business. Each of them have been trained and their children are being put through school due to the efforts of the lodges.
In order to better protect wildlife and improve the local environment in Kenya, our local lodge owners launched the “Secluded Africa Conservation Trust” at the end of 2017. SACT is a charity foundation dedicated to the promotion of environmental protection, improvement, and conservation for the benefit of the communities living around the area. In addition, the projects are also directed wholly towards the promotion of the advancement of education of the underprivileged children of East Africa.
