Travel guides
With the right guides, lodges and itinerary, a safari makes an amazing family holiday, and you can even end on the beach.
At Responsible Travel, we don’t support zoos; we believe spotting wildlife in the wild is the best way to see it.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
On this trip, guests rely on walking for four days rather than motor transport. These include a nature walk in Mabira Forest on day two, a swamp walk in Bigodi on day seven, a forest walk in Kalinzu on day eleven, and a wildlife safari walk in Lake Mburo on day twelve. Walking relies only on human energy, avoiding fossil fuels and reducing emissions compared to vehicle transport. At The Boma Hotel, solar water heaters are used for showers, which lowers electricity consumption compared to conventional heating systems.
The accommodations selected for this trip have measures in place to reduce their environmental impact. For example, the Boma Hotel has a rainwater catchment system that stores water in tanks for use in gardening and other activities. The hotel also works with Papercraft, a local project that recycles glass and paper waste into products such as menu covers, notebooks, beads, and handmade soaps, which are used in guest rooms.
In addition, many of the hotel’s fruits and vegetables are grown in a nearby garden, and organic waste is composted to make fertilizer, reducing landfill disposal and supporting local food production.
People
Most of the accommodations are locally owned, including The Boma Hotel. This ensures that local staff are prioritized in hiring, providing income and improving living standards. The itinerary also includes visits to community enterprises such as the Mpigi Royal Drum Makers, where guests can observe traditional drum-making techniques. Some visitors choose to purchase crafts directly from the artisans, which supports their livelihoods and helps preserve cultural traditions.Primate World Safaris employs staff entirely from Uganda, with many drawn from local communities. Park rangers, porters, and guides are all local people, and internal training is provided to staff, especially guides, to ensure they stay updated with current knowledge and continue to develop professionally.
