Description of Azores holiday, tailor made
There is no single right way to experience the Azores. Some travellers come almost entirely for the whales, others want volcanic landscapes and walking trails, while some are happiest combining wildlife with local food, culture, active experiences and plenty of time to explore independently.
Our tailor-made holidays are designed around those differences.
Rather than starting with a fixed itinerary, we begin with what matters most to you: the time of year you want to travel, the islands you would like to explore, the pace you prefer and the experiences you are most interested in. From there, we can create an itinerary that brings those elements together without filling every day simply for the sake of it.
Whale and dolphin watching can be at the heart of your holiday or just one part of it. Depending on the season and island, we can include repeated wildlife trips, more specialist marine experiences and opportunities to learn about the research taking place around the Azores.
On land, your holiday might take you through São Miguel’s geothermal landscapes, crater lakes and forests; along guided walking trails; onto the water by kayak; or into more active experiences such as canyoning, coasteering, surfing and cycling.
We can also introduce a different side of island life through food and cultural experiences. Explore Ponta Delgada with a local guide, discover Azorean farming traditions, visit local producers, learn about beekeeping, enjoy farm-to-table dining or simply build in time to find your own favourite restaurants and places.
Accommodation can be chosen to suit the character of your trip, from comfortable centrally located hotels to smaller boutique properties, self-contained stays and special locations surrounded by gardens or volcanic landscapes. We can also arrange car hire, transfers and guided touring according to how independently you would like to travel.
Your itinerary might focus entirely on São Miguel, combine two or more islands, or simply add a few carefully chosen experiences around a slower-paced stay. If you already like one of our set holidays but want to change its length, accommodation, activities or overall balance, we can use that as a starting point too.
The sample itinerary below is designed purely to show what is possible. Your own holiday could look completely different.
IMPORTANT NOTE: International flights are not included. Direct UK flight options to the Azores are more limited for 2027 than in previous years, so we strongly recommend checking suitable flights before confirming your dates. Indirect routes via mainland Portugal can work very well, and we can also put you in touch with our flight-agent partner.

We really enjoyed all our experiences as Sao Miguel is a very beautiful island. The best trip was our Dolphin and Whale watching trip where we saw 7 sperm whales and a pod of about 15 dolphins who chose to come to our Catamaran to play and mate with each other! Definitely supported conservation and the locals are very passionate about their islands. Read full reviewReviewed on 10 Jun 2026 by Philip Neville
The holiday was fabulous and well organised from start to finish. Half day Lagoa do Fogo 4x4 trip was the highlight of land tours. Nordeste day trip was pretty special. The bottlenose dolphins gave a good display and on the last time out, saw Orca, only two doing a swim by, but pretty special all the same. Our driver/guides for the tours were all born on the island of Sao Miguel and were great. Read full reviewReviewed on 02 May 2026 by Sarah Goodwin
First rate. From initial enquiry to finally booking and then my time here there has been excellent, thoughtful and intelligent customer service. Seeing the power of nature. From the amazing blues of the ocean to the wonderful marine animals to the volcanic craters to the fumaroles to the geo thermal springs. Read full reviewReviewed on 22 Apr 2026 by Vicky Bartlett
The Whales!! The Whales!!! We saw Blue Whales, a pod of 8 Orcas, 2 species of dolphins and a loggerhead turtle. But the whole of Sao Miguel island was beautiful and definitely worth exploring too. It was absolutely incredible and really kid friendly. I also highly recommend the canyoning. We had to make some last minute changes to our trip but the host company were incredible at helping us make the changes and come up with solutions. Can’t recommend them highly enough. Interacting with local tour guides and learning about the history and culture of the islands. The friendliness of islanders and their pride in their islands also impressed me. I believe my holiday benefited local people, not only from shops to restaurants to lodging, but also from introducing tourists to the islands so they gain an appreciation. Really pleased with it. Working with my guide Samuel. He was fantastic...well-versed in the local flora and fauna and did indeed take me to some hidden gems where I got some wonderful and different images. He was also punctual and very helpful. WILDLIFE WATCHING AND RESEARCHWhere whale and dolphin watching is included, we work with licensed local operators whose crews include experienced skippers, lookouts and marine guides. Wildlife is observed in the wild and sightings are never guaranteed.
The traditional land-based vigias, once used during the islands’ whaling era, now help locate whales and dolphins for wildlife watching. Marine teams also contribute to ongoing observation and research, including photographic identification and the collection of sighting data.
MARINE EDUCATION AND PRACTICAL CONSERVATION
Local marine teams are involved in education and community outreach, including work with schools and young people to increase awareness of whales, dolphins and the wider Atlantic environment.
Some also take part in practical initiatives such as coastal clean-ups, marine-litter projects and research collaborations, connecting tourism with scientific and community work taking place in the islands.
EXPLORING THE ISLANDS
Because this holiday is tailor made, we can include experiences such as walking, cycling and kayaking alongside guided land tours, allowing guests to experience the landscapes in different ways.
Where appropriate, itineraries can also include locally produced food and drink, including Azorean tea, wine and other regional products, as well as visits to independently run businesses and producers.
People
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE AND EMPLOYMENTOur holidays rely on locally based guides, skippers, lookouts, marine biologists and other specialists who bring both professional expertise and detailed knowledge of the islands.
The vigias are a particularly important part of this story: skills once associated with hunting whales have been repurposed around observing living animals and supporting wildlife tourism.
LOCAL BUSINESSES AND CULTURE
Wherever suitable, we work with locally based accommodation providers, guides, restaurants and activity operators, including independently owned properties and restored historic buildings.
Tailor-made itineraries can also incorporate local food, wine, tea, crafts and cultural experiences, helping visitors engage with the people and traditions of the islands rather than simply moving between sightseeing stops.
EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND THE NEXT GENERATION
Our local partners work with students, researchers and young people through school outreach, field experience, mentoring and scientific collaboration.
We prefer to work with partners whose approach can be seen in practical actions: staff expertise, wildlife research, education, community involvement and careful management of encounters with wild animals.
ACCESSIBILITY AND INDIVIDUAL PLANNING
As each holiday is designed individually, we can take mobility and accessibility requirements into account when selecting accommodation, transport and activities. We discuss these needs before booking and check arrangements directly with local suppliers rather than assuming that one solution will suit every traveller.
