Description of Piedmont holiday in Italy, food, wine & culture
Set between the Alps and the Apennines, the Langhe is a landscape shaped as much by its vineyards as by the people who work them. This easygoing walking holiday places you right within that setting, linking hilltop villages, wine estates and quiet trails with time to properly appreciate the region’s food culture.
Based initially in Barolo, routes lead through rolling countryside to Novello, Monforte d'Alba and Castiglione Falletto, before continuing along the Barbaresco wine trail towards Neive and Alba. Days are unhurried, with manageable walking distances interspersed with visits to wineries, a cooking class and opportunities to experience truffle hunting in the surrounding countryside.
The appeal of this Piedmont walking and food holiday lies in the details. Sitting down to taste Barolo where it is produced, learning how regional dishes are prepared or watching a truffle dog at work all bring the landscape into sharper focus. Alba’s food culture and Turin’s refined architecture round off the journey with a broader cultural perspective.
Staying in locally owned accommodation ensures that your visit directly benefits the communities that define the Langhe. Travelling largely on foot and by train keeps the environmental impact low, too, creating a holiday that feels both indulgent and considered in equal measure.

1 Reviews of Piedmont holiday in Italy, food, wine & culture
Reviewed on 16 Sep 2025 by Brian Borowsky
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
I loved the chances to wander around towns layered with history from era upon era. The visit to the Rundale Palace was spectacular, but I love a palace.
The opportunity to connect with real people on the ground was neat, as well. Seeing the renovations in progress at Blankenfeld Manor, and hearing the story from the family who bought it; talking to and dining with the owners at Rumkanai Manor; making dinner with the cousins of the owner at Vila Luna. All terrific.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
August was a terrific time to visit - nothing was too busy, everything was open, etc. Riga Old Town on the weekend is a bit rowdy. Not at all a problem, but on a long weekend or a weekend in summer, I suspect there are quite a few bucks and hens weekends in town.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Definitely. Everything was very local, filled with people from the community that we visited who cared about what we were doing or seeing.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Responsible Travel
Planet
We understand the importance of caring for the environment and maintaining an ethos of sustainability. With a commitment to reduce our carbon footprint, this trip incorporates the use of public transport, such as trains, wherever possible. This conscious choice to use shared local transports significantly helps in reducing CO2 emissions per individual traveler. Moreover, we advocate the use of human-powered transportation, evident in our itinerary that includes five days of walking trips. This not only provides a unique experience but also significantly contributes to our goal of carbon reduction.
In our effort to further diminish our carbon footprint, all accommodations are small, locally-owned businesses which have a lesser environmental impact compared to large-scale hotel chains.
Our commitment to create a positive impact on the environment also transcends to the choices we make. For this reason, our preferred accommodations are not only committed to reducing their environmental impact, but also to restoring nature. Examples include the chosen Agriturismo, a farm stay that upholds environmentally friendly agricultural practices, and other accommodations that work on restoring and maintaining local green areas.
Creating a positive environment also means financially supporting areas where the biodiversity is preserved. Therefore, we include fees for various parks and protected areas in the travel plans, contributing to the protection and recovery of those environments.
At our core, we consider ourselves as guardians of the planet for future generations. We donate 1% of each trip to various sustainability causes. By choosing us, you are not only endorsing a memorable journey but also creating lasting impacts on the planet.
People
We firmly believe in nurturing the local economies of the places we visit, hence, the concept of this trip swirls around leveraging locally owned accommodations. The essence of this travel excursion is to reside in these local establishments for seven nights, offering an authentic cultural richness while directly providing economic benefits to the region.Furthermore, to amplify local economic opportunities, we prioritize the employment of local guides who possess a deep-rooted knowledge and intimate understanding of the area. We also choose to dine in local restaurants, thus ensuring the money spent circulates within the community and doesn’t get outsourced. This strategy fosters economic growth for local businesses, thus strengthening their foothold in the industry.
Employment, inclusivity, and diversity hold paramount importance to us. We take pride in revealing that most of the staff that travelers interact with during the trip are locals, impacting the visited communities positively while benefiting the local job market.
Moreover, the ethos of this trip extends beyond just travel. We are staunch proponents of inclusivity and diversity, fostering an environment that is warm, open, and welcoming to everyone. The trip is designed to be LGBTQ+ friendly, and we ensure that all guests, irrespective of their sexual orientation or nationality, are treated with the utmost respect and equality. We celebrate diversity and believe that such an approach enriches our travel experiences, creates lifelong bonds, and fosters a global community built on respect and mutual understanding.
