CARBON REDUCTION

Both 4 Rivers Camp and Nxai Pan run exclusively on solar power using their own solar plants. Kwando Safaris camps are located in environmentally sensitive areas and to ensure that the camps cause minimal impact on their surroundings, the company has invested in highly efficient solar generating equipment to operate each camp. All electrical appliances used in the camps are energy saving products - from light bulbs to fans and ice machines.

Intelligent design compliments the use of environmentally friendly energy generation. The use of insulated walling (where applicable) and thatch within the design of the camps avoids the need for cooling systems which use a large amount of power. Insulation and thatch provide a comfortable interior temperature regardless of the extremes of heat and cold which are characteristic of desert areas. Insulated cladding for hot water geysers and piping greatly increases the efficiency of the hot water systems by reducing heat loss from the system overnight, especially during the colder months of the year.

All waste water in Kwando Safaris camps is treated using above ground state-of-the-art sewerage treatment plants. This ensures that there is no cross contamination of the soils or ground water through discharge of grey or black water. The fully treated end product is eventually returned to the ground.

Non-motorised activities are also a feature of this trip, in both camps it is possible to do walking safaris and at 4 Rivers Camp seasonal mokoro trips are possible. Substituting a motorised activity for a human powered activity reducing the overall carbon impact of the trip.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Both camps included in this itinerary are located in vast areas of wilderness. For example 4 Rivers Camp, the second camp in the itinerary is just one of three camps in the 175,000 ha / 432,000 acres Kwara concession This camp was opened in 2023 in a previously unexplored area of the concession, having teams on the ground in this area reduces the likelihood of poaching and further protects wildlife.

Expert local guides are used throughout the itinerary who have the utmost respect for wildlife and we also provide our travellers with guides on how to safari responsibly and with the least environmental impact possible.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

Kwando Safaris, the operator behind the two camps featured in this itinerary, is a 100% citizen-owned company 98% of their staff are citizens of Botswana, and all the friendly faces you will see in camp are 100% citizens – they believe you should be shown Botswana by the people of Botswana.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Kwando Safaris are proud members of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that allows travellers to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination. It asks travellers to bring some suppliers needed by the Mummy's Angels project they support, which will make a priceless impact in the lives of local children and families.

The grassroots initiative Mummy's Angels is a Maun-based project to support and empower mothers and their newborns in Maun who do not have financial or family support. Mummy's Angels was started in April 2018 voluntarily by three ladies who have lived in Maun for some years and are familiar with the plight that some less fortunate women face here. Mummy's Angels started out donating their children's pre-loved clothes and baby essentials to these ladies in need. Kwando Safaris invites guests to bring some of the requested items with them as they come on safari. For every item donated, Kwando Safaris will match with a similar item, doubling the impact of each donation.
