CARBON REDUCTION

We are committed to reducing the carbon emissions of the Inca Trail Trek Experience. While unavoidable domestic flights between Lima and Cusco are included, the trip minimizes the use of motor vehicles by incorporating human-powered transport for much of the adventure. A significant portion of the journey involves trekking 43 kilometers along the Inca Trail, ensuring a minimal carbon footprint during this time. Shared transportation options, such as buses and trains, are used to travel to and from Machu Picchu and other points of interest, effectively lowering CO2 emissions per person.

In terms of accommodation, the trek includes camping for three nights, which reduces energy usage. Additionally, we encourage travelers to adopt sustainable practices throughout their journey, such as carrying reusable water bottles and minimizing waste. Vegetarian meal options are available throughout the trip, contributing to a lower environmental impact by reducing the consumption of animal products.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

We uphold high standards of environmental responsibility during the Inca Trail Trek Experience. We work with accommodations that actively minimize their environmental impact through practices such as reducing plastic waste, recycling, and minimizing water use where possible. Along the trek, efforts are made to ensure that campsites leave no trace, preserving the natural beauty of the Andes and Machu Picchu for future generations.

Moreover, the Inca Trail trek includes entrance fees to Machu Picchu and the surrounding protected areas. These fees contribute to the conservation of this UNESCO World Heritage site and its biodiversity. Travelers also have the opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural habitat without disturbing it, in line with our pledge to support responsible animal viewing and conservation efforts. Our guides are trained to share valuable information on how to minimize the environmental footprint during the trek.

LOCAL ECONOMY

We are deeply committed to supporting the local economy in Peru. This Inca Trail Trek Experience exclusively uses locally owned accommodations in Lima, Cusco, and the campgrounds along the trail. By choosing local providers, we ensure that the economic benefits of tourism flow directly into the communities we visit. Local porters, guides, and cooks are employed for the trek, further supporting livelihoods in the region.

Additionally, the trip provides opportunities to support local artisans and markets. For example, visitors are encouraged to explore Cusco’s vibrant San Pedro Market and purchase locally made crafts. This not only enhances the cultural experience for travelers but also provides income to local artisans and small businesses.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

We and our partners prioritize inclusivity and fair employment practices. Nearly all staff employed on this trek, including guides, porters, and drivers, are local to the Cusco region. This commitment to hiring locally ensures that tourism directly benefits the local community. Moreover, we support the inclusion of marginalized groups, including indigenous people and women, within the tourism sector.

All staff employed on the trip are paid above the minimum wage, ensuring fair compensation for their hard work. While the trek requires moderate fitness, we ensure that diverse travelers, including LGBTQ+ individuals, feel safe and welcome throughout their experience. Although the trek itself is not suitable for those with mobility issues, we strive to accommodate a wide range of travelers whenever possible.
