1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this adventure. Sara made sure my language skills were challenged daily, but at a pace that allowed me to make meaningful progress without feeling overwhelmed or frustrated. Sara also did a wonderful job of incorporating the history, ecology, and culture of the Canary Islands into the experience, which added depth to the trip. I especially valued the flexibility to adapt our plans when weather or other circumstances changed.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you are booking this adventure because you truly want to improve your Spanish, you will not be disappointed. Sara is a patient and encouraging teacher who is wonderful at explaining a concept in different ways until it clicks.
It is also helpful to know that you will be staying in a small pueblo with a limited selection of restaurants and shops. For me, this was part of the charm and exactly what I wanted—it contributed to the immersive experience and slower pace of the trip. There are opportunities to visit other parts of Tenerife with more restaurants and shopping, but if having lots of shops or nightlife within walking distance is an important part of your vacation, just be aware that this is not that type of destination. For travelers looking for language immersion in an authentic, quieter setting, it is a wonderful fit.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I definitely felt that my tourism dollars were staying within the local community. From the accommodations and language instruction to the public transportation use for other experiences, the trip felt rooted in and supportive of the local community rather than centered around large-scale tourism.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I went into this trip with an open mind and very few preconceived expectations, and I came away incredibly happy with the entire experience. From the language learning and daily activities to exploring northern Tenerife, the whole week felt like a perfect fit for me. I could see real improvement in my Spanish, But perhaps more importantly, I left feeling much more confident speaking and interacting with people. At the same time, I learned so much about the history, culture, ecology, and everyday life of the Canary Islands. It was a wonderfully well-rounded experience and exactly the kind of immersive holiday I was hoping for.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION

We encourage responsible travel practices by prioritizing local and low-impact activities. Guests are asked to bring reusable water bottles to minimize single-use plastics, and we reduce waste by sourcing local, seasonal products with minimal packaging. Meals are primarily vegetarian, featuring fresh, seasonal produce from local markets and occasionally my own garden, reducing the carbon footprint.

Walking and shared public transportation form the core of our itinerary. For instance, we explore rural paths and volcanic trails on foot, encouraging a deeper connection with nature while minimizing carbon emissions. Guests also receive practical eco-tips to reduce their impact during their stay, fostering eco-conscious habits.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

As an official Canary Islands guide, I focus on raising awareness of the fragility and richness of Tenerife’s ecosystems. During visits to rural and natural areas, we emphasize "leave no trace" principles, encourage recycling, and promote responsible tourism practices.

While the trip does not include protected area entry fees, it fosters deep appreciation for nature, ensuring that participants leave with a greater awareness of their role in protecting biodiversity.

LOCAL ECONOMY

This tour is designed to support the local economy by partnering with small businesses and family-owned accommodations. Travellers stay in rural properties operated by locals, and throughout the trip, they have opportunities to shop at local shops and markets, directly contributing to Tenerife's economy.

The dining experience is exclusively at traditional, family-run restaurant, which helps ensure that local establishments benefit from tourism. Additionally, the excursions are focused on less-explored areas, diverting the flow of visitors from typical tourist hotspots and spreading economic benefits to rural regions.

One of the highlights of the tour is Icod el Alto, where travellers can connect with local farmers and enjoy fresh produce grown in the area. This interaction fosters personal connections and promotes the responsible practice of traditional farming, further supporting Tenerife’s rural communities.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY

The tour is designed and led by a local female guide, creating opportunities for cultural exchange in rural areas that are often overlooked by mass tourism.

This tour is inclusive, with an emphasis on respecting and welcoming all travellers, including those who identify as LGBTQ+. It actively promotes inclusivity by supporting fair wages for local collaborators and providing equitable opportunities within the tourism industry.

The tour celebrates Tenerife’s cultural diversity by embracing its rural traditions and encouraging a deeper understanding of the island’s rich heritage. This approach ensures that every aspect of the tour, from the guides to the experiences, fosters meaningful connections and mutual respect, while also promoting social and cultural diversity within the local economy.
