Description of Volunteer with chimpanzees, South Africa

Chimp Eden, operated by the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa, opened in 2006 as the country's first and only chimpanzee sanctuary. True to its name, Chimp Eden provides a haven for endangered chimps rescued from devastating circumstances such as the bushmeat trade, illegal pet markets, human-wildlife conflicts, and exploitative entertainment industries.

The sanctuary helps traumatised chimps rediscover natural behaviours like climbing, foraging, and bonding with other chimpanzees within its vast, semi-wild enclosures. Chimp Eden's mission extends beyond rescue and rehabilitation, focusing on raising awareness of the threats faced by wild chimpanzees through education and advocacy. By telling the powerful stories of the chimps, the sanctuary inspires meaningful action to protect these great apes and secure their future.

Volunteering at Chimp Eden offers an unparalleled opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of 33 rescued chimpanzees. Volunteers assist with daily care, from feeding and cleaning enclosures to creating enrichment that stimulates their natural behaviours and enhances their quality of life. They'll also help with construction and maintenance projects that improve the sanctuary's infrastructure and support its long-term sustainability. Whether you're passionate about primates or seeking a life-changing experience, volunteering at Chimp Eden is a chance to make a meaningful impact while connecting with nature and exploring stunning South Africa in your free time.
