Description of Sabah and Sarawak tailor made holiday

This itinerary is designed for curious travellers who want to go beyond the usual highlights of Borneo. You’ll uncover the cultural heritage of Kuching, meet orangutans, and admire Borneo’s natural beauty, including jungle treks, and a river cruise on the Kinabatangtan.

Along the way, you’ll stay in comfortable accommodation and enjoy meaningful experiences that reveal the real Borneo – from traditional longhouses to rare wildlife encounters.

You’ll start in Kuching, where the city’s layered heritage sets the scene. From there, travel deep into the interior to meet the Iban people in their remote longhouses, learning about their traditions first-hand.

You’ll visit little-visited villages, walk jungle trails to hidden waterfalls, and explore riverbanks teeming with wildlife.

A highlight of the trip is the visit to the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. From there, you'll travel by boat to Abai Jungle Lodge on the Kinabatangan River, where you will spend two nights in a chalet accommodation.

Whether you’re watching wild orangutans, sampling Indigenous dishes, or joining a traditional dance, each experience is thoughtfully designed to bring you closer to Borneo’s wild, natural beauty.

We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the variety of the trip with some jungle walks, being in a remote place and river safari. The wildlife spotting was exciting and amazing. Make sure to bring good rain gear. It will get wet and wild. Read full review

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION

We're committed to responsible travel, and one of the ways we put that into practice is through our pioneering carbon scoring system – the first of its kind. This innovative approach helps us measure the environmental impact of every tailor-made trip. By collaborating closely with our suppliers via a detailed carbon-scoring survey, we gain valuable insights into what’s working well and where there’s room to do better.

Where possible, we try to use alternative modes of transport to flying; which is why this trip includes treks and walks using our own two feet! Part of this is a walk to Batang Ai Hydro Lake, where you will then cross the lake by boat to get to Ukom Longhouse. We also opt to transfer you back at the end of your trip via boat to Sandakan.

Local and vegetarian food available throughout.

ENVIRONMENT & WILDLIFE

We support the Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, where you can see semi-wild orangutans in a natural habitat. It is a nature reserve and sanctuary for animals that were once injured, orphaned, or kept illegally as pets. Since opening in 1975, the centre has successfully rehabilitated and released orangutans into its 653-hectare forest, where many now live freely—some even raising young of their own.

You can also visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, currently home to 43 rescued sun bears, all of which were previously kept in captivity. The centre features spacious forest enclosures designed to support their welfare and help rehabilitate them for potential release back into the wild.

Accommodation is another way that we can practice responsible tourism. There are multiple opportunities to stay in authentic accommodations, such as the hilltop homestay in Kampung Sting, and the homestay dormitory in Bengoh.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

Other local economic opportunities include the guided heritage walk, where you will visit temples, museums, and markets. There is the chance to try local delicacies on a food trail that brings Sarawak’s multicultural flavours to life.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY

By visiting the Mari-Mari Cultural Village, we support indigenous communities and contribute to the local economy by supporting local career opportunities. Learn more about Sabah’s rich heritage, where the customs of five main tribes come to life.

The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) supports close-up study of sun bears in both captive and natural settings, enabling vital research and preparation for work with wild populations. In doing so, it provides employment opportunities for local researchers and rehabilitators. Founded by Dr Siew Te Wong—whose groundbreaking 1998 study was the first ecological research on wild sun bears in Sabah—the centre is built on decades of conservation expertise. Today, BSBCC collaborates with global universities on a wide range of projects, from seed dispersal and thermoregulation to genetic mapping and sustainable reintroduction strategies.

We believe that education - both locally and internationally - is essential to protecting sun bears and their rainforest habitat for future generations. That’s why the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre shares engaging educational resources through outreach programmes in schools and plantations, online, and at our conservation centre in Sepilok, Borneo. By working closely with local communities, especially in rural areas where awareness of animal welfare is often limited, we aim to inspire the next generation of wildlife ambassadors.
