Description of Peru and Bolivia holiday

Spend just over two weeks on this Peru and Bolivia holiday and you won’t just see the standout tourism sites of each place but have a chance to go deeper into the jungle, too.

Travelling from Peru’s Pacific coast to the high-altitude plains of Bolivia, you’ll experience everything from Inca heritage and vibrant cities to remote wilderness and salt deserts. Highlights on this trip include visiting Machu Picchu, the standout site in Peru, and spending time in the Sacred Valley of the Incas nearby. Natural wonders come thick and fast once you head into Bolivia: Lake Titicaca and then the surreal, high-altitude Uyuni Slat Flat with its miles and miles of deserted scenery.

What makes this trip truly special, though, is the opportunity to spend time in Chalalan Ecolodge in Madidi National Park, Bolivia. Reachable only by boat, this area in the Amazon Basin is one of the most biodiverse places on earth, and the ecolodge is a community-based tourism project that supports the San José de Uchupiamonas community.

Blending bucket-list sights with genuine cultural connection, this Peru and Bolivia holiday offers a varied and memorable journey through the heart of the Andes.

Here's how to travel like a local, including a handy section on food, shopping & people.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Carbon Reduction

Our tours are thoughtfully designed to visit key sites dedicated to the conservation of nature and indigenous lands. By carefully planning our itineraries, we reduce travel time and maximize the number of attractions visited. Whenever feasible, we prioritize highway travel over flights. In Peru, we use electric cars in Lima, Sacred Valey of the Incas and Cusco, when possible, for transporting tourists. We work with other travel operators to share tours and services, but always trying to have small to medium size groups. In Bolivia, we share boat transport on Lake Titicaca with other operators and independent travelers, particularly for those staying overnight on Isla del Sol. For Madidi National Park, we use medium-sized motorized boats to minimize disturbances to the wildlife along the pristine Beni and Tuichi rivers.

To further limit our environmental impact, visits to small towns in Sacred Valley of the Incas and Isla del Sol are conducted entirely on foot. This allows visitors to experience the breathtaking landscape and engage with the vibrant local culture. In Madidi National Park, tours include guided hikes along extensive trails in untouched rainforest, complemented by canoe excursions on Lake Chalalan. These non-motorized paddling experiences help preserve the lake’s ecosystem and minimize disturbance to its diverse fauna.

Environment and Wildlife

We select hotels that are energy efficient or utilize alternative energy sources, and in our lodges, natural gas is used for cooking and hot showers. Solid waste generated in destinations such as Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Cusco, Isla del Sol, Lake Titicaca, Lake Chalalan, and Salar de Uyuni is collected and transported to designated collection centers in major cities for proper disposal.

Our guiding principle is to prioritize wildlife and wilderness in all our tours. We do not permit fishing or feeding of wild animals to facilitate photography, and we prohibit cutting lianas or marking trees. Visitors are encouraged to observe wildlife in its natural environment, fostering a respectful and genuine connection with pristine nature and its delicate ecology.

People

Local Economy

Our tours bring visitors to the most renowned destinations in Peru and Bolivia, including Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley of the Incas, La Paz, Lake Titicaca, Madidi National Park, and the Uyuni Salt Flat—places where tourism is the primary and most sustainable economic activity throughout the year. As tour operators, we are deeply committed to supporting the sound and sustainable development of tourism in these regions.

Employment, Inclusivity, and Diversity

We employ guides and drivers who are native to the areas we visit, such as in Lima, Cusco, Aguas Calientes, Sacred Valley of the Incas, La Paz, Lake Titicaca (Isla del Sol), the Bolivian Amazon (Chalalan Lodge inside Madid National Park), and the Salar de Uyuni. Supporting local families is central to our commitment to economic and social sustainability, made possible through responsible tourism. We also recognize the important role of women in lodge operations and service roles across all destinations, and we are dedicated to fully supporting and empowering our female workforce.
