Description of Svalbard sailing holiday

On this Svalbard sailing holiday you don’t just observe the Arctic – you become part of it. Sail, ski, trek, and discover the north like the explorers of old, but with a modern promise: to leave only gentle footprints behind.

Embark on an unforgettable Arctic voyage where adventure meets responsible sailing. Starting in Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world, you’ll set sail into the pristine wilderness of Svalbard aboard a comfortable expedition yacht. This journey is designed for curious travellers who want more than just a cruise – it’s an opportunity to actively participate, learn, and connect with nature in its purest form.

From day one, you’ll be part of the crew. Learn the art of sailing in Arctic waters: handle ropes, practice navigation, and even take the helm under the guidance of experienced skippers. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a complete beginner, this is your chance to master seamanship skills while respecting the fragile environment around you.

For those who crave snow-covered peaks, the voyage offers optional ski touring excursions. Equipped with safety gear and accompanied by professional guides, you’ll ascend untouched slopes and carve your way down in complete silence, surrounded by dramatic fjords and glaciers. It’s a rare opportunity to combine sailing and skiing in one of the most remote corners of the planet.

Step ashore for trekking expeditions led by local guides, who share their deep knowledge of Svalbard’s history, wildlife, and geology. Wander through landscapes shaped by ice and time, where polar bears roam and seabirds nest on towering cliffs. Every hike is a lesson in resilience – of nature and of those who once explored these lands.

This is not just a trip – it’s a commitment to responsible travel. You'll sail in a small group and take steps to reduce emissions and respect wildlife. By choosing this experience, you support local communities and help preserve the Arctic for future generations.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Carbon Reduce
Our expeditions prioritize low-impact travel. We sail primarily under wind power, reducing reliance on engines and minimizing emissions. On land, we explore through trekking rather than motorized transport, allowing guests to experience the Arctic in a sustainable way. Meals onboard can be vegetarian or vegan, prepared by the crew with care, further lowering our carbon footprint. Life at sea means packing light—this naturally limits waste generation, as we often carry our trash for extended periods until proper disposal is possible. Equipment is maintained for longevity, and before voyages, we engage young people in traditional bosun workshops to teach skills that keep our vessel seaworthy for years, avoiding unnecessary replacements.

Environment & Wildlife
Sailing under wind power not only reduces emissions but also minimizes noise pollution, creating a quieter presence in sensitive Arctic ecosystems. Our routes include historic scientific bases, where we reflect on the environmental impact of early exploration and research, fostering awareness of conservation. We offer a zero-emission alternative to ferries operating in these regions. Trekking is conducted with utmost respect for wildlife—we move carefully and unobtrusively, remembering we are guests in their home. Every aspect of our journey is designed to protect the fragile Arctic environment while deepening understanding of its unique biodiversity.

People

Local Economy
We actively support local communities by working with regional guides who share their knowledge of the Arctic’s unique landscapes and culture. Whenever possible, we rent equipment from local providers rather than bringing everything ourselves, ensuring that our presence contributes to the local economy rather than bypassing it.

Employment, Inclusivity & Diversity
Our trips require only a small crew—typically one skipper—who is currently Polish, but we make a conscious effort to hire local guides for land-based activities. Skippers in our team come from diverse backgrounds, and we proudly employ women in this role. Recruitment is based solely on official legal qualifications; if someone meets the required certifications, they are welcome to work with us regardless of their background.
Our office team works remotely, enabling employment opportunities for people from smaller towns who might otherwise have limited access to such jobs. Inclusivity is central to our ethos: minor disabilities are not a barrier to joining our crew, though severe mobility impairments (such as requiring a wheelchair) are unfortunately incompatible with the confined space of a small sailing yacht. We do not discriminate against LGBTQ+ communities—everyone is welcome aboard.
