Description of Best of Slovenia walking holiday, Alpe-Adria & Juliana Trail

A glorious week of self-guided walking awaits you on this holiday taking in sections of two of Slovenia’s most iconic routes, the Alpe-Adria Trail and the Juliana Trail. Beginning in the resort of town of Kranjska Gora, surrounded by dramatic limestone peaks, you’ll explore some of the most scenic settings in Slovenia’s majestic Triglav National Park, with an itinerary crafted by local experts who know these mountains well.

Though paced to give you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the landscapes, as well as mountain culture, this Slovenia Alpe-Adria walking holiday is not without challenge. The longest day will span 20km, though it can be shortened if necessary. You’ll also need to manage some steep inclines and declines. Regular hill walkers, however, will find this trip very manageable, and since it’s tailor made, some routes can be adjusted if necessary.

Besides the views, some of the highlights of this trip include a night in a mountain dormitory, with a hearty homecooked Slovenian dinner awaiting you; plenty of wild swim spots, and a free morning when the more adventurous might indulge in some canyoning or white water rafting. There is also a day when you’ll climb aboard an electric mountain bike, for a fun way to cover a longer distance. You may encounter shepherds as you cross picturesque alpine pastures – it’s not unknown to be welcomed for a bowl of yoghurt, or a glass of schnapps.

Accommodation is in locally owned alpine hotels. Your luggage is transported between hotels for convenience, so that you can have the freedom of walking with just a daypack. And of course, although this is a self-guided trip, you can rely on complete support as you need it from a friendly Slovenian team who love showing visitors the region they know so well.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION:

The huge majority of your carbon footprint on this tour will be caused by your flight to Slovenia. If you come from a European country, we encourage you to check the train or bus options for your arrival to Slovenia.

Once in Slovenia, you will move around mostly on foot, with options for biking and even rafting, i.e. choosing between different 'human-powered' activities. Only small distances of the trip will be covered with a van (less than 300km in the whole trip!), joining transfers with other travellers where possible for a smaller impact. Your luggage transfers will also be optimized accordingly to our other guests routes. Of course, as this is a walking holiday, you'll spend most of the time walking and interacting with the locals - learning about food, wine, history, culture, and more.

Vegetarian and vegan food is available each day. We are constantly communicating with our suppliers and encouraging them to optimize the portions accordingly to their guests wishes and needs. Whenever possible we choose restaurants and other venues that work with locally-sourced and seasonal products.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE:

On this tour, we normally welcome couples or small groups, which means that there's less impact on fauna and flora compared to larger groups.

We avoid single-use plastic and strongly encourage everyone to bring their water bottle and drink tap water throughout the trip. Tap water is drinkable all over Slovenia. Wherever possible we aim to use accommodations that have implemented food/plastic/energy/water reduction practices.

We contribute to nature restoration & recovery by donating to local NGOs. Our last donation was for reforestation in the Karst area which was heavily damaged during the 2022 forest fire. We also attended the reforestation days there as a team in 2024.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY:

We are a small family-run local company, based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. This is our home and we love collaborating with local hotels, guides, craftsmen, chefs, farmers, winemakers, and other locally-owned gems. We recognize that the well-being and satisfaction of the local people who are not directly involved or benefited from tourism is crucial. We have a deep respect for local cultures, environments, and the individuals who graciously share their communities with us.

On this tour, more than 50% of all accommodations and all other service providers are locally owned. Most of our lunch venues are owned and operated by small local companies or individuals, highlighting traditional Slovenian cuisine. We are especially happy to be able to cooperate with small local companies - our friends and colleagues.

Most of your money spent stays in the region, supporting these businesses and helping individuals build a better life.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY:

100% of our employees and our nearest subcontractors are locals. Not everyone owns a Slovenian passport but has lived in Slovenia 15+ years and is a Slovenian resident. Everyone is getting a fair payment, far better than the minimum wage in Slovenia. We have both female & male guides. Their sexual or religious orientation is of zero importance.

This trip is LGBTQ+ friendly. We accept all travelers who have the physical capacity to do this trip. Limited hearing is not an issue. Since this is a hiking tour, limited mobility, limited vision, or cognitive issues might be a problem.
