CARBON REDUCTION

This 16-day itinerary is designed as an overland journey through Northern Madagascar, with only one domestic flight included between Antsiranana and Antananarivo at the end of the tour. The remainder of the journey is completed by road, reducing the need for multiple internal flights while allowing travellers to experience Madagascar's diverse landscapes and local communities.

The tour includes several days of walking in protected areas, including Ankarafantsika National Park, Marojejy National Park, Ankarana Special Reserve and Montagne d'Ambre National Park. Exploring these sites on foot provides a low-impact way to discover Madagascar's exceptional biodiversity while reducing transport emissions during excursions.

Accommodation is provided mainly by locally owned Malagasy hotels, lodges and camps. Accommodation partners are encouraged to reduce single-use plastics, promote responsible water and energy use, separate waste where possible and source food locally whenever feasible.

Travellers are encouraged to carry reusable water bottles, minimise plastic waste and use water and electricity responsibly throughout the tour.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

This itinerary visits five protected areas across Northern Madagascar: Ankarafantsika National Park, Marojejy National Park, Daraina Reserve, Ankarana Special Reserve and Montagne d'Ambre National Park. Entrance fees contribute directly to the conservation and management of these protected areas, supporting habitat protection and biodiversity conservation.

The visit to Daraina Reserve also supports conservation initiatives led by Fanamby, while tourism activities at Tattersali Camp generate income for surrounding local communities, creating a direct link between tourism and nature conservation.

Wildlife excursions are led by licensed local park guides who help visitors understand Madagascar's unique ecosystems and endangered species, including the critically endangered Silky Sifaka and Golden-crowned Sifaka. Throughout the journey, travellers are encouraged to remain on designated trails, avoid disturbing wildlife and respect park regulations.

Accommodation providers are encouraged to strengthen their environmental practices through waste reduction, responsible water management and reduced plastic consumption, contributing to a more sustainable tourism sector in Madagascar.
