Cycling is at the heart of this 14-day journey from Paris to Amsterdam. Travellers cover approximately 850 km by bike, crossing France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Each stage is completed by bicycle, allowing travellers to experience the changing landscapes at a slow pace while keeping transport emissions during the itinerary very low.

Reducing transport emissions

The journey has been designed as one continuous point-to-point cycling route from Paris to Amsterdam, avoiding the need for motorised transfers between the daily stages. Both Paris and Amsterdam are major international rail hubs, making it possible for many European travellers to reach the starting point and return from the final destination by train rather than by car or plane.

Responsible accommodation

We favour small-scale, independent and locally operated accommodation along the route wherever possible. Environmental practices are taken into consideration when this information is available, including measures to reduce water and energy consumption, limit single-use plastics, recycle waste, reduce unnecessary laundry and use environmentally responsible cleaning products.

Vegetarian and vegan options and local food

Travellers are encouraged to choose vegetarian and plant-based meals throughout the journey and to discover food produced in the regions they cycle through. The itinerary passes through a variety of agricultural and coastal areas in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, providing opportunities to eat in independent restaurants, visit local markets and choose fresh and seasonal products.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Low-impact travel through diverse natural environments

The itinerary makes extensive use of established cycle paths, greenways and existing roads. It crosses a remarkable variety of landscapes, from the Vexin and the Pays de Bray to the Normandy coast, the Baie de Somme, the Opal Coast, the dunes of northern France and Belgium, and the coastal landscapes of Zeeland and the Netherlands.

Several stages pass through or close to environmentally sensitive coastal areas, including the Baie de Somme, the Marquenterre area, the Platier d'Oye, the Dunes de Flandres and the Zeeland coast. Keeping travellers on existing routes helps reduce unnecessary disturbance to surrounding habitats.

Raising traveller awareness

Each traveller receives a digital roadbook containing recommendations for reducing their impact throughout the journey. Travellers are encouraged to remain on marked paths, respect protected areas and local regulations, keep noise to a minimum, avoid disturbing or feeding wildlife, and never leave waste behind.

This is particularly important on the coastal stages, where dunes, beaches, wetlands and tidal areas provide habitats for numerous species, including migratory and coastal birds. Travellers are also encouraged to use reusable water bottles and bags and to sort their waste wherever facilities are available.

LOCAL ECONOMY

This journey spreads tourism spending across three countries and numerous smaller towns and communities rather than concentrating it exclusively in major destinations. Overnight stops include Gisors, Forges-les-Eaux, Dieppe, Cayeux-sur-Mer, Berck-sur-Mer, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Gravelines, Nieuwpoort, Breskens, Haamstede, Hoek van Holland and Noordwijk before the journey finishes in Amsterdam.

Wherever possible, we prioritise independent hotels, guesthouses and locally operated accommodation. Travellers are also encouraged to support independent restaurants, cafés, shops, markets and regional producers throughout the journey.

The slow pace of cycling provides many opportunities to stop in smaller communities that might otherwise be bypassed by conventional tourism. From Norman villages and seaside towns in northern France to Belgian coastal communities and the towns of Zeeland, travellers can purchase local products, eat in independent establishments and contribute directly to local economies.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

We work with local and regional tourism providers throughout France, Belgium and the Netherlands, including accommodation providers and other businesses required to operate the journey. Prioritising local services helps retain a greater share of tourism revenue within the destinations visited and supports employment along the route.

We and our operational partners are expected to comply with the applicable employment legislation and working standards of the countries in which they operate, including legal minimum-wage requirements.

The trip is designed to welcome travellers from different backgrounds and with different levels of cycling experience. The availability of both conventional bicycles and e-bikes can make this relatively long itinerary accessible to a broader range of cyclists, while travellers remain free to complete each stage at their own pace..
