Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION
We are committed to offering low-impact holidays, which benefit the communities we visit, as well as our travellers and the natural environment. We believe in the transformative power of travel and aim to minimise our ecological footprint by selecting eco-friendly accommodations, encouraging waste reduction, and supporting sustainable transportation options where possible.

This walking holiday offers a low-impact way to experience the beauty of the Lake District. With most days spent exploring on foot directly from Hassness Country House or via short local transfers, the holiday encourages slow, sustainable travel and a deeper connection with the landscape. The holiday's emphasis on walking, nature appreciation and a simpler pace of life offers an environmentally conscious alternative to more carbon-intensive breaks, while providing an authentic experience of one of England's most celebrated landscapes.

Vegetarian options are typically available at Hassness Country House, and vegan or other dietary requirements can often be catered for when requested in advance. Guests should advise any dietary needs at the time of booking to ensure suitable arrangements can be made.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
We operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy in national parks, archaeological sites, monuments, and other sensitive areas like beaches and coastlines; these should be treated with the ultimate respect to maintain them for future generations. Our tour leaders are trained to promote this message to our customers during the holiday.

By focusing on the quieter Western Lakes, guests can enjoy some of the region's most spectacular scenery while helping to ease pressure on the Lake District's busiest honeypot locations. Guided walks follow established paths through valleys, woodlands, lakes and fells, promoting responsible enjoyment of this treasured national park and encouraging visitors to appreciate and protect its unique natural environment.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY
We provide ample opportunities to explore the local area on foot, where you can shop for local wares and crafts and immerse yourselves in the destination's rich cultural heritage. To enhance your experience, your tour leader will be joined by a knowledgeable, well-qualified local guide for the duration of the trip.

Staying at Hassness Country House also helps support the local rural economy. Along the way, walkers have opportunities to visit traditional Lakeland villages such as Buttermere and Loweswater, enjoy refreshments in local pubs and tearooms, and discover independently owned businesses that play an important role in sustaining these remote communities.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY & DIVERSITY
We are committed to responsible and sustainable travel practices that support both the local environment and surrounding communities. By selecting environmentally conscious accommodation, encouraging reduced waste, and prioritising sustainable transport where possible, we aim to minimise our footprint. Through respectful engagement and conscious travel choices, we strive to protect natural landscapes while delivering enriching and memorable experiences.
