CARBON REDUCTIONThe itinerary combines rail travel for longer intercity journeys with low-distance exploration within the destinations. High-speed trains connect Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu, Kaili and Guilin, reducing the need to rely on domestic flights between these major stops. In Beijing and Xi’an, city walks form an important part of the itinerary: travelers use the subway to reach the starting points, then explore historic neighborhoods, streets and cultural sites largely on foot, with cycling also included along Xi’an’s Ancient City Wall. In Guizhou and Yangshuo, hiking and countryside cycling continue this slower approach to local travel, allowing sightseeing to take place without adding short vehicle journeys between every stop.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
The itinerary favors walking, cycling and small-scale outdoor activities when exploring natural and rural areas, which allows travelers to experience these places without adding intensive activities to the landscape. The Great Wall hikes, Guizhou countryside walks and Yangshuo cycling route all take place at a relatively gentle pace, while the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base provides a managed setting for wildlife observation and learning about conservation work. Keeping nature-based experiences focused on walking, cycling and observation can help limit the need for additional motorized activities and encourages travelers to appreciate landscapes and wildlife without direct physical interaction with animals.

LOCAL ECONOMYThe journey includes several forms of local spending and locally delivered services beyond major tourist attractions. Markets in Xi’an and Yangshuo connect travelers with everyday food, agricultural products and handmade goods, while family meals and traditional craft experiences bring local producers and practitioners into the travel experience. In Guizhou, textile and bamboo crafts provide further opportunities to encounter locally made products and traditional skills. These arrangements allow part of the visitor experience and associated spending to take place within smaller businesses, family-based activities and rural communities along the route.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
The itinerary involves a range of locally based roles, including guides, drivers, family hosts, craftspeople and cultural practitioners. It also incorporates traditional skills such as Miao and Dong textile and bamboo craftsmanship, allowing local knowledge and specialist skills to form part of the travel experience.
As the route moves from Beijing and Xi’an through Chengdu, Guizhou and Guangxi, it brings together communities with different languages, traditions, architecture, crafts and performing arts. This gives employment and tourism-related opportunities a broader local dimension across both urban and rural destinations.
