the amazing things you'll be doing
Our life tours have been designed for the responsible traveler that is keen to take on a rewarding challenge and support our ongoing community programs, but who maybe short of time or keen to tag onto another experience. Mukurumuji Camp only sleeps 21 people so you can be assured of a very personal experience.

Our life camps allow you to reach out to less privileged communities and really make a difference. You will work alongside the local community on school projects and help improve the lives of the local people with an emphasis on the local school children.

Highlights
  • Community development volunteer program
  • Interact with a friendly Kenyan community as a guest not a tourist
  • Enjoy the beauty of the Kenyan coastline and stunning Indian Ocean
  • Game viewing in Shimba Hills National Reserve and Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary (2-4 Weeks trip)
  • Game viewing in Tsavo East National Park (3 and 4 week trip)
  • Enjoy a wide range of optional water sport activities (Depending on duration of stay)
    projects
The community work will involve expanding and enhancing existing facilities as well as building new ones. By spending your days assisting in construction, painting and renovation of classrooms and other amenities (e.g. making desks), you will learn new skills and will also appreciate what a valuable contribution your time and effort makes to the community. There may also be the opportunity to teach and coach sports and assist in landscaping and tree planting.

Mukurumuji Camp where you will stay, is located in a secluded region of the Shimba Hills National Reserve boundary. It is surrounded by indigenous communities and a wide variety of wildlife. Mukurumuji is frequently visited by Elephant, Buffalo, Sable Antelope and occasionally Leopard; as well as being home to many other rare animal varieties and wildlife.

‘Safari’ is the Swahili word for journey and no visit to Africa is truly complete without one. Your three day Big Game Safari will take you 3 hours to Tsavo region through the Kenyan Bush to search for some of the spectacular wildlife Kenya has to offer.

Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary: If you are able to stay for two or more weeks you will visit Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary where you will learn about Elephant behavior and the threats facing this amazing animal. If you are only able to spare a few days but are still keen to indulge in some safari activities we can work with you to arrange an itinerary to suit your needs.

    travellers' tales
I learned that I can make bricks, whittle trees and generally adapt to what is available to make the most of things. I will be in touch again when booking my next holiday!  (more)
volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you are looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
    highly commended
This tourism business was Highly Commended in our 2007 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards - the largest awards of their kind in the world, and organised by responsibletravel.com in association with The Times, World Travel Market and Geographical Magazine, of the Royal Geographical Society.

Since 2004, the Awards has recognised individuals, companies and organisations in travel making a big commitment to the culture and economies of local communities and helping to conserve biodiversity.

how this holiday makes a difference
Highly Commended in the Responsible Tourism Awards 2007, Best Volunteering Organisation category, we own our ground operation, which means we have complete control over the integrity of our projects and the quality of the experiences we provide. We additionally subsidise our philanthropic objectives through additional funds raised by our Charitable Trust.

Your participation on this tour provides a significant contribution to indigenous communities, environment and wildlife in the Shimba Hills. Achievements include the construction of a new water supply at Mukurumuji village and an initiative at Stephen Kanja School to construct a school kitchen which is used to prepare food daily for 110 nursery children to sustain them through their school day. We take significant measures to reduce our impact on the environment and offset our carbon footprint. We educate volunteers to the importance of using water conservatively and encourage them to adhere to guidelines on the amount of water they use in the camp.

Our initiatives in Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary, which include producing Elephant dung paper, have generated revenue for the community and in turn provided protection for the animals. During just two months in 2007, varying quantities of 6 different species of tree were planted all with a significant value to the community in some form, from indigenous hardwood trees such as Mbambakofi and Mvule through to Jatropha, used to produce soaps and bio fuel. Other species included Neem used in many medical purposes and chilli trees which can be sold to the community or used on farm fencing to prevent Elephants from crop raiding.

Our Team in Africa originate from the host country and their passion for sustainable development of their communities and environment is inspiring. Camp Managers such as Patrick in Kenya are the local guys that make our experiences unique. They provide advice on conduct, language training and skilled project managers such as Sammy will make camp feel like home. This interaction creates a unique bond between you and the Community and leaves you feeling a guest not a tourist. 100% of fresh produce and project materials are sourced from sustainable local supplies and group sizes are kept small to reduce any negative impact. Our programmes combine Community work and Wildlife Conservation in an uncompromising way.

Our commitment to the environment does not stop in Africa our UK office is dedicated to saving energy and have systems in place to deliver shredded recycled paper to local pet shops for bedding!

In short, our commitment to local people and the environment is not a by-product of our programmes but core to everything we do - we adhere to the Responsible Tourism code of practice and encourage everyone we work with to do the same.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
