Description of Alentejo self guided cycling holiday, Portugal
Settle into the saddle on this eight day cycling holiday in Portugal’s south-central Alentejo region. As this is a tailor made tour you’ll be invited to choose from a variety of country trails and coastal tracks to ensure you get to make the most of this naturally endearing area, both by bike and on foot.
Cycle routes extend through agricultural landscapes where eucalyptus and lavender hang on the breeze and shepherds tend their flocks overlooking orange and olive groves. Cycle to the coast and it’s the Atlantic high-rollers that sweep salty sea air into your longs as well as supplying secret sandy coves from where to unwrap bifana sandwiches before cooling off in the ocean.
Fields of wheat make way for undulating hillsides topped with cork trees and ramshackle farmhouses to offer cyclists untold excuses to stop for a rest and soak up the sunshine. Daily distances range from 30kms – 60kms however, this is a tailor made cycling holiday so make sure you factor in plenty of time to spend by the hotel pool or opting for second helpings of Portuguese sericaia pudding.
Throughout this tour your luggage will be transferred from one hotel to the next. Excellent route maps and notes are also included as is an emergency support service, if required. Tailor made tours are a great way to bridge the gap between fully independent and fully guided travel.

1 Reviews of Alentejo self guided cycling holiday, Portugal
Reviewed on 29 Feb 2016 by Arnold Nickel
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
My most memorable part of he holiday in Portugal was cycling along the high cliffs of Alentejo by the sea with 60 km winds at my back, even though one needed to be mindful with the wind on cycling so close to the edge of the cliff on a sandy track! The 10 percent grade for seemingly endless kms from Alejur to Monchique was a challenge that I felt really good about having accomplished in my 80th year. It made me feel blessed for the health and strength that I have.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Feel confident that Viceentina travel will make sure that your trip is safe and enjoyable, and the hotel stops are comfortable. Feb cycling can be chilly and wet so dress accordingly, even though we were lucky not to have rain during the cycling part.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes I did. It was really nice to be able to interact with people along the way, and travel in a style that allowed for sights, smells and sounds to be foremost in my relationship with the environment. Ricardo emphasized his stand very clearly in regards environmental issues.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
I have cycled in several other European countries and it certainly has also been a favourable experience. I am already recommending this trip to my friends as one that needs to be put high up in their bucket list.

We are committed to running independent/individual and small group tours, and always operating these with our local partners and communities helping to reduce the impact. The benefit this specific area starts to be noticed by the local authorities and agents.Because this kind of non-massive tourism belongs to an eco-tourism movement that provides sustainability to the Sudoeste Alentejano ecosystem in Portugal.
All tours have a previous briefing at the first accommodation with the monitor that will give the all support during the tour .Clients are informed about the reasons we are trying to preserve this area and how to act following /adopt an “eco-behavior” during their stay on this area. We think that a god “eco-behavior” is for example to use public transports to get Vila Nova Milfontes, take care of your own garbage using the eco points near the populations, give preference to the biological food, to respect nature being responsible, not collecting any king of plant of animal (remember nature is fragile and they could be rare and protected, and even the most ordinary as a meaning in nature). This way we encourage travelers to any relevant suggestions to minimize damage to the environment, and local wildlife and marine ecosystems
On this self-guided Cycling holidays programmes clients are contributing to 0% C02 emission to the air during they stay in the Alentejo Coast with their Cycling actions. As an active tourism operator responsible for all the logistic, we also contribute to minimize this damage using eco engines on our vehicles to transport clients and luggage between the accommodations (efficiency is a philosophy that we try to improve all the time).

Cycling in our opinion is one of the best’s ways to explore the countryside and the coastal area in the Alentejo, traveling longer distances at our own pace, enjoying with plenty of detail of our region without damaging the environment. For this especial self-guided Cycling tour we did a previous selection of “rural tourism” accommodations in small villages and places, allowing the client the integration with the owners and their families that also live there or simple to take the option of relaxing on these unique places.
On this especial tour we have dinners meals included at your accommodations this will make the all difference having the opportunity to taste the local flavors and products “home made cooked”. The client also as included on this package some picnics provided for each accommodation on the morning before leaving the hotel, that way they don’t need to care with this, on this region we take “good care of you”.
In this way we are helping to conserve a rural lifestyle and contribute to the overall sustainable development of the area.
Our approach looks to: Buying local products from small producers and collaborating with locally based people we are helping the local economy.
The philophy is to Manage our “Pedaling” to limit our environmental impact on this Coastal Area of Alentejo and Algarve.at .
