Anticipation in advance of the holiday
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be very sure about the description of the itinerary and the style or spirit of the holiday, if it is an activity holiday. There are a broad range of interpretations regarding skills/fitness levels expected, or the intended focus. If your holiday advertises both sport AND nature, be careful to ask exactly which is given priority. They are not always compatible, especially if the majority of the group prefer one over another.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
It did not support conservation but it was a fairly low-impact holiday. The mountain refuge staff make a great effort to reduce waste from hopitality.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
I was very disappointed that the description did not match the holiday. This was acknowledged by the provider and Responsible Travel. I was also disappointed by the attitude of the guide to the participants - brusque, impatient, stigmatising - about their skiing technique. Other activity holidays have a "challenge by choice" ethos which is enabling and collegiate, and allows people to participate in decision-making. We did not learn about route choice, the local area and environmental considerations or winter conditions apart from a very brief exercise in how to use a transceiver. Responsible Travel offered me a compensation of £100 off my next booking.

CARBON REDUCTIONWe encourage guests to travel to the Queyras by train, with Mont-Dauphin–Guillestre station providing easy access to the region. Once the trip begins, ski touring is powered entirely by human effort, allowing you to explore remote mountain landscapes without ski lifts or motorised transport.
We operate as a Travelife Certified tour operator, use Carmacal to measure the carbon footprint of our holidays and contribute on your behalf to a rewilding project with Mossy Earth. In our office, we minimise paper use through digital travel documents and reuse or recycle materials wherever possible.
ENVIRONMENT & WILDLIFE
The Queyras Regional Nature Park is a remarkable winter wilderness where wildlife must survive long, harsh winters. Travelling responsibly is essential, and your guide will help you understand how to minimise your impact while exploring this fragile environment.
You'll learn how to recognise animal tracks in the snow, discover how species such as chamois and wild boar adapt to winter conditions, and gain a deeper appreciation of this unique alpine ecosystem. Our UIAGM mountain guides are trained in environmental awareness as part of their qualifications and enjoy sharing their knowledge of the region's wildlife, geology and mountain environment throughout the trip.
We also follow the guidance of the Queyras Regional Nature Park and mountain refuges, encouraging simple good practices such as carrying rubbish back down from the mountains and respecting protected wildlife habitats.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYThis holiday supports the mountain communities of the Queyras by using independent mountain refuges that remain open throughout the winter. Staying in these refuges helps provide an important source of income for refuge guardians, whose dedication allows visitors to experience the mountains responsibly even during the quieter winter months.
We also prioritise local suppliers and services wherever possible, ensuring that more of your holiday spending remains within the local economy.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY & DIVERSITY
We work with qualified local UIAGM mountain guides who live and work in the region, supporting skilled professionals with an intimate knowledge of the Queyras and its conditions. Small group sizes, with a maximum of seven participants per guide, allow for a more personal experience while maintaining the highest standards of safety, learning and environmental responsibility.
