Description of Amalfi Coast moderate walking holiday, Italy

Beginning with a few days in the beautiful surrounds of Amalfi itself, this small group walking holiday on the Amalfi Coast takes you through some of the region’s most jaw-dropping landscapes. Wander through fragrant groves of citrus and vineyards, bask in what many (rightly) consider to be the finest sea views in the world, and explore a renowned nature reserve.

See the 11th century ruins of Europe’s oldest paper factories, the fascinating remains of Pompeii, and a palace built by a Roman emperor on Capri. Stroll through gardens so beautiful they’ll take your breath away, enjoy gelatos by the seashore in peaceful fishing villages, and take a dip in the natural spring of a historic Roman villa.

The scenery is divine, and it’s complimented by a range of welcoming accommodations, from guesthouses to hotels that are run by knowledgeable locals, always happy to provide you with some tips on where to eat, or what to see. The Amalfi Coast is such a hugely popular destination, beloved by celebrities as much as anyone else, but this walking tour enables you to get well off the beaten tourist track for a far more immersive experience.

Moderate walks take you in the footsteps of ancient Greeks and Romans, descending steps that are centuries old, following mule tracks and passing towering cliffs and waterfalls. There are plenty of opportunities to pause for a refreshing limoncello, and to dine on sumptuous Italian cuisine. After all, you’ve more than earned it.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Our environmental sustainable principles: We choose to work with local supplies who have responsible practices in place and the staff we use on the Amalfi Coast come from a background of nature conservation, land use planning, rural development and environmental protection. For example through the planning of networks of footpaths & trails, and the actual cleaning and waymarking of many of these they do so in collaboration with the local population.

Information that we provide contains details on minimum impact walking. This includes when in the countryside be mindful that you are walking in National Parks, farmers fields and villages. This information includes to stay on the trails, avoid short cuts and to avoid paths widening if you need to walk through the mud do so. You need to be mindful that you may be walking through fragile environments that are enjoyed by many.

Anything you take with you for the days walk, must be taken out. Never throw rubbish and dispose in the bins of the next village you come to.

When you make your booking, your pre-departure information is provided by email. Our office uses recycled paper and we recycle our bottles, paper and other items. Office staff travel by public transport to/from work.

Global Warming and Carbon Balancing: The root cause of Global Warming is society's dependence on emission creating fossil fuel. Planting trees is not going to reverse this trend or cancel our carbon emissions very quickly or effectively. We believe the way to reduce these dependencies is to create clean energy production. Therefore, we support renewable energy projects like wind and solar power, and we are aligned with Climate Friendly, the gold standard setter in effective, meaningful action addressing climate change. So, while we believe that tree planting can play a small role in greenhouse gas abatement, we have gone the extra mile in promoting a longer term solution. Is this cheap? No. Is it responsible? Absolutely!

Over the years of organising walks on the Amalfi Coast we have built relationships with local accommodation providers and work with them to operate responsibly.

After a thoroughly rewarding day’s walking you will be warmly welcomed into a locally owned hotel, B&B or guesthouse which has been chosen for its charm. Where possible within the same village we use a variety of accommodation to ensure that we are supporting many within the community. One hotel we use in Praiano is run by the Espositos Family who have owned the property since 1953. They take great pride in their business and are committed to offering a welcoming stay at their hotel. Another property in Positano displays art and sculptures of visiting artists and that of locals. In the reception area there is an art gallery to greet clients as they enter which continues into the rooms.

We encourage you to purchase lunch and dinners from the local shops, village farmers markets, pubs and cafes along the way which in turn helps employment within the community.

Friendly local staff are ideally placed to give you a knowledgeable insight into the local terrain, flora and fauna and an authentic account of the history of the region.

We provide opportunities for real cultural exchange, where locals and visitors alike can share and learn from each other in an environment of mutual respect. We strive to educate our travellers about the destination and its local cultures as well as providing guidelines on appropriate behaviour to minimise impact.

No local payments policy: Local cash payments are becoming increasingly popular with many operators in the adventure travel industry. This policy seems to benefit the tour operators more than the local economies or the travellers, as it avoids local taxes and transfers the costs and risks of cash handling onto the travellers. In accordance with our Responsible Travel practices, we have chosen a policy of not asking for such payments.
