Description of Austria skiing and winter activity holiday

This skiing and winter activity holiday is hosted at MoaAlm, a unique, beautifully designed mountain house, situated high in the Austrian Alps.

With the focus on being ‘relaxingly active’ the holidays we offer are a healthy balance of fresh air, mountain activities and great freshly cooked plant based food. A holiday here puts you right at the heart of our warm family atmosphere, with dedicated, enthusiastic staff, and a cosy but stylish living space.

SNOW SHOE HIKING:
We believe there is more to winter in the Alps than skiing. Situated at 1800m, our location offers a superb base from which to explore the breathtaking mountains of East Tirol on foot. Our local guide will teach you how to use snow shoes before taking you on stunning hikes through beautiful snow laden forests and on high Alpine ridges.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
A popular sport in Europe, cross country skiing is done on a relatively flat course and is a really fun way to explore the valleys. Our guide is experienced at teaching beginners how to cross country ski, and we can guarantee you will be laughing your socks off as you learn how to glide through the snow.

DOWNHILL SKIING AND SKI TOURING:
We are situated on the edge of the GG resort in Kals am Grossglockner. A beautiful resort, it offers a perfect mixture or wide open slopes and windy forest runs perfect for all levels. It is possible to ski from here to the ski lift if you are an experienced off piste skier, otherwise we will give you a lift to and from the resort.

FOOD:
We are passionate about healthy living and reducing our impact on the environment. Therefore included in your holiday are six three course evening meals which are entirely plant based. Our in house chef creates seasonal menus and our food is organic and as locally sourced as possible. We also offer a delicious, organic breakfast and freshly baked cakes with organic tea and coffee on a daily basis.

YOGA:
Every holiday with us includes five yoga classes in our in-house yoga studio with panoramic mountain views. We believe that yoga is for everyone, no matter what your age or level of fitness and, as such, our classes are prepared with all of our guests in mind.

ABOUT THE AREA
We are situated on the edge of the Hohe Tauren National Park underneath Austria's highest mountain, Groίglockner. This means we have a unique opportunity to spot rare wildlife such as Ibex on an almost daily basis. Our local guide is extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna around the house and will be able to tell you about the unique Alpine species you will see. Our local village Kals is still a traditional Alpine village, where many of the residents graze animals on the high alpine pastures.

MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was recently featured in The Guardian, in a list of 'mind, body and spirit breaks'.

No Snow?
Our holidays are all about looking at the options of exploring the mountains daily to best suit the weather conditions and we operate our holidays at times whereby natural snowfall is most likely. We have a indoor yoga space for morning classes and everyday we offer an alternative to piste skiing. We offer daily snowshoe hiking or winter hikes, dependent on conditions. We also offer cross country skiing, which is weather permitting and not reliant on snow making facilities.

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

We are passionate about sustainability therefore we have taken the following actions to reduce our carbon emissions:

- We source locally grown or produced food (with lower food miles)

- We cook only plant based food which is healthy for the mind, body and planet.

- We aim to reduce the transport emissions of our guests: encouraging rail, public transport, walking, cycling, electric cars; and design our activities to use our own bodies as much as possible!

- Using renewable energy - we have a bank of solar panels which provide us with hot water and we have a wood chip boiler for heating.

- Reducing energy use -our house is super insulated, we use only low energy bulbs, we reject single us plastic, use low energy appliances have a water capture system and gow our own plants!

- Our staff live and work at MoaAlm, this reduces transport emissions and international travel.

Environment

MoaAlm is situated at 1800m, it is 2km up the mountain from the settlement of Taurer. MoaAlm is only accessible with our own vehicle or by foot/snowshoe or ski. We will provide pick up and drop off on arrival/departure to your vehicle or your airport transfer in Lienz. Daily transport will involve a combination of snowshoe, ski and toboggan - far more suited to our goal of enjoying and preserving the natural beauty of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Some days may involve carrying a picnic on a hike or ski touring trip - guests will be actively involved in carrying out waste. Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.

Community

Guests will eat out for lunch on occasion and one evening at local recommended restaurants.

The area also has an excellent ski school and advanced mountain guiding network of instructors that guests may choose to take advantage of. All fresh food and drink and will be sourced locally where possible.

We will be employing a team of 4 full time staff who will receive a generous package of accommodation, food, ski pass and salary. Opportunities will be also be available through our staff incentive scheme to participate in training courses annually. This scheme is in place to encourage staff to make this a rewarding full time lifestyle choice that can be sustainable rather than just a seasonal short term option.

Local tradesmen have been involved in the renovation of MoaAlm and we have pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. These tradesmen are highly skilled particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally produced felt.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It's so hard to pick one; I can honestly say that the whole holiday was memorable but the beauty of the area-the forests, the mountains, the snow covered peaks-all breath taking.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

At this time of year - in Moa Alm itself - it is quite warm. I had no T Shirts. And if you want to fully engage with all the winter sports you can do, get yourself to a good fitness level.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. It was clear that close relationships had been formed with local farmers and those offering the winter sports activities outside of the resort itself. There was an emphasis on recycling, reducing waste and eating seasonal produce.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would honestly give it full marks. I would love to return.
