Description of Austria skiing and winter activity holiday

In January 2018 MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was featured by The Guardian as one of the best retreats in the world for mind, body and spirit breaks.

This Austria skiing and winter activity holiday takes a very relaxed approach to time in the mountains, following an itinerary that suits the group’s interests and experience. Based at our lovingly restored mountain farmhouse and chalet in Kals am Grossglockner in the East Tirol, we can take trips out into the superb mountain terrain of Hohe Tauern National Park, head up to mountain huts with panoramic views or go snowshoeing across blankets of white, surrounded by peaks of over 3000m.

We enjoy a healthy mountain life all year round here, and so we ensure that you not only eat hearty homemade food, organic and locally sourced when possible, but we also offer daily yoga sessions. Beginners are most welcome, and when you see the mountain views from our yoga studio, you will want to begin!

We are proud of our little spot in the East Tyrol, at the heart of a farming community where outdoor living is the norm. As well as skiing, we offer winter hikes, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and backcountry tours. Our maximum group size is fifteen, sleeping in six bedrooms, and we also have a relaxing lounge area and terrace. Take a look at a provisional idea of how we may plan out a typical week below, but really the final decision is up to our guests. We let them lead the way in choosing the activities, and we lead the way to all the best spots to do them!

No Snow?
Our holidays are all about looking at the options of exploring the mountains daily to best suit the weather conditions and we operate our holidays at times whereby natural snowfall is most likely. We have a indoor yoga space for morning classes and everyday we offer an alternative to piste skiing. We offer daily snowshoe hiking or winter hikes, dependent on conditions. We also offer cross country skiing, which is weather permitting and not reliant on snow making facilities.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Austria skiing and winter activity holiday

Environment

MoaAlm is situated at 1800m, it is 2km up the mountain from the settlement of Taurer. MoaAlm is only accessible with our own vehicle or by foot/snowshoe or ski. We will provide pick up and drop off on arrival/departure to your vehicle or your airport transfer in Lienz. Daily transport will involve a combination of snowshoe, ski and toboggan - far more suited to our goal of enjoying and preserving the natural beauty of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Some days may involve carrying a picnic on a hike or ski touring trip - guests will be actively involved in carrying out waste. Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.

Community

Guests will eat out for lunch on occasion and one evening at local recommended restaurants.

The area also has an excellent ski school and advanced mountain guiding network of instructors that guests may choose to take advantage of. All fresh food and drink and will be sourced locally where possible.

We will be employing a team of 4 full time staff who will receive a generous package of accommodation, food, ski pass and salary. Opportunities will be also be available through our staff incentive scheme to participate in training courses annually. This scheme is in place to encourage staff to make this a rewarding full time lifestyle choice that can be sustainable rather than just a seasonal short term option.

Local tradesmen have been involved in the renovation of MoaAlm and we have pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. These tradesmen are highly skilled particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally produced felt.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It's so hard to pick one; I can honestly say that the whole holiday was memorable but the beauty of the area-the forests, the mountains, the snow covered peaks-all breath taking.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

At this time of year - in Moa Alm itself - it is quite warm. I had no T Shirts. And if you want to fully engage with all the winter sports you can do, get yourself to a good fitness level.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. It was clear that close relationships had been formed with local farmers and those offering the winter sports activities outside of the resort itself. There was an emphasis on recycling, reducing waste and eating seasonal produce.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would honestly give it full marks. I would love to return.
