Description of Austria yoga & walking holiday

This yoga and hiking holiday is hosted at MoaAlm, a unique, beautifully designed mountain house, situated high in the Austrian Alps.

With the focus on being ‘RelaxinglyActive’ the holidays we offer are a healthy balance of fresh air, mountain activities and great freshly cooked plant based food. A holiday at MoaAlm puts you right at the heart of our warm family atmosphere, with dedicated, enthusiastic staff, and a cosy but stylish living space.

HIKING:
Situated at 1800m, MoaAlm offers a superb base from which to explore the breathtaking mountains of East Tirol. We create a personalised holiday, giving you the opportunity to share our passion for the mountains, with daily guided hikes with a local guide.

FOOD:
We are passionate about healthy living and reducing our impact on the environment. Therefore included in your holiday are six three course evening meals which are entirely plant based. Our in house chef creates seasonal menus and our food is organic and as locally sourced as possible. We also offer a delicious, organic breakfast and freshly baked cakes with organic tea and coffee on a daily basis.

YOGA:
Every holiday with us includes five yoga classes in our in-house yoga studio with panoramic mountain views. Whenever the weather allows, we take our yoga practice outside to take advantage of the fresh mountain air. At MoaAlm we believe that yoga is for everyone, no matter what your age or level of fitness and, as such, our classes are prepared with all of our guests’ needs in mind.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
If you would like an adrenaline rush, we can also arrange additional activities with our local partners, such as rafting, canyoning, paragliding and rock climbing.

ABOUT THE AREA
We are situated on the edge of the Hohe Tauren National Park underneath Austria's highest mountain, Großglockner. This means we have a unique opportunity to spot rare wildlife such as Ibex on an almost daily basis. Our local guide is extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna around MoaAlm and will be able to tell you about the unique Alpine species you will see. Our local village Kals is still a traditional Alpine village, where many of the residents graze animals on the high alpine pastures. Kals is also home to a small ski resort and a few lovely traditional restaurants.

MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was recently featured in The Guardian, in a list of 'mind, body and spirit breaks'.

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

We are passionate about sustainability therefore we have taken the following actions to reduce our carbon emissions:

- We source locally grown or produced food (with lower food miles)

- We cook only plant based food which is healthy for the mind, body and planet.

- We aim to reduce the transport emissions of our guests: encouraging rail, public transport, walking, cycling, electric cars; and design our activities to use our own bodies as much as possible!

- Using renewable energy - we have a bank of solar panels which provide us with hot water and we have a wood chip boiler for heating.

- Reducing energy use -our house is super insulated, we use only low energy bulbs, we reject single us plastic, use low energy appliances have a water capture system and gow our own plants!

- Our staff live and work at MoaAlm, this reduces transport emissions and international travel.

Environment

MoaAlm is situated at 1800m, it is 2km up the mountain from the settlement of Taurer, a fragile environment which it is our goal to protect.

We serve plant based, locally sourced organic food, and change our menu with the seasons to ensure we are creating as minimul impact on the environment as possible.

Recycling is also a major part of our waste disposal. We only send one bin bag of waste to landfill each season, and are aiming to reduce our plastic usage this year.

Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.

Natural materials have been used in the construction and renovation of MoaAlm where possible and we have been pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. The local tradesmen we employ are highly skilled, particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally-produced felt.

Community

Guests will eat out for lunch on occasion and one evening at locally-run recommended restaurants.

We offer a weekly yoga class and coffee morning for local residents.

We support local farmers in taking care of the forestry and the forest tracks around MoaAlm.

The area also has an excellent ski school and advanced mountain guiding network of instructors that guests may choose to take advantage of. All fresh food and drink will be sourced locally where possible.

We will be employ an international team of full time staff who will receive a generous package of accommodation, food, ski pass and salary. Opportunities will also be available through our staff incentive scheme to participate in training courses annually. This scheme is in place to encourage staff to make this a rewarding full time lifestyle choice that can be sustainable rather than just a seasonal short term option.

Local tradesmen have been involved in the renovation of MoaAlm and we have pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. These tradesmen are highly skilled particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally produced felt.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

A fantastic hike to a mountain hut above the tree line in the snow. It felt like being on top of the world.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring lots of layers as the weather is different all the way round the hike from the valley to the peaks. Good waterproof boots will keep you comfortable & dry.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes as the food was locally sourced & our hiking guide lives in the nearest city.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A fantastic experience from start to end. The house is beautifully decorated & the staff are warm & friendly. All the food was delicious but the plant based food for evening meal was incredible. The hikes were just the right amount of challenge , the scenery was breath taking & Petra our guide incredibly knowledgeable about the area & it’s nature. The yoga was also great & helped stretch out our muscles along with the hot tub with views of snow capped mountains. Nirvana.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The views on our walks were stunning. We had beautiful weather so the colours as autumn approached were amazing. The food was plentiful and delicious!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Pack for all seasons. Be in good shape to be able to fully enjoy the walks - our guide's pace was great but there's a lot of climbing!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We occasionally ate at local restaurants, run by local people. The water was heated by solar panels, food was composted and journeys only made by van when needed.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A great week in the clean fresh Austrian air, with friendly and welcoming hosts - they made a great team. It's more hiking than yoga oriented as there's just
one hour of yoga a day.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The stunning scenery and beautifully fresh air.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It’s a great hiking holiday with a really reliable and kind mountain guide and some excellent yoga led by Rosie. The place is pretty remote which has both positives and slight downsides. You get to know everyone in the group pretty well as you’re with them everyday. If you go in the spring/summer, take the ski gondola up to the top, the view is incredible.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, we ate in local places for lunch pretty often. All the food served at MoaAlm is organic.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Pretty good. Fantastic scenery. The food is good (vegetarian) although I didn’t think there was enough of it for the evening meal, when you are most hungry after a day’s activity.

Read the operator's response here:

Thank you Anna for your review - we are really happy to hear that you enjoyed your time at MoaAlm... very sorry though that you didn't feel there was enough food in the evenings and hate to think that you were suffering in silence - we will certainly take this on board and ensure that nobody feels they can't ask for more in future if they are still peckish! Very best wishes, Polly

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole experience was memorable. Barbara is an amazing yoga teacher and started each day in a perfect way. The hiking was exceptional, from the
local knowledge to the gorgeous views. Each hike was discussed before hand and terrain, challenge and scenery was incorporated for the groups likes and
needs. Every meal was a taste sensation, again with all needs and tastes catered for using local and fresh produce. The atmosphere created by the staff is
one of comfort, caring and openness which made for a very relaxing and comfortable break. Climbing Grossglockner was an amazing highlight and
toasting marshmellows and chatting by firelight was also a memorable experience.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for lots of fresh air and have a reasonable amount of fitness, so you can enjoy all aspects of the holiday.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Places to eat on our hikes were at local restaurants, so hopefully local businesses benefited from our visit and also the building of the holiday providers business.
As the holiday is actively walking and yoga, hopefully we didn't impact on the environment in a bad way.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The whole holiday was an amazing experience. The only improvement would be to include a hot-tub to relieve achy limbs at the end of long, sumptuous walks
:-) . Thank you to Barbara, Hubert, Nelson, Beatrix, Yvonne and team for putting in so much effort to make a truly memorable holiday,

Everything was perfect and far better than I could have imagined. The people
of Moa Alm, the accommodation, the food and the stunning walks/ scenery

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This is a great active / relax holiday with great people. Moa Alm is very
unique. The yoga, walks, food and company was great. I love the
communal eating part of the holiday where guests and staff sit together at
the beginning and end of the day over great food. This is more like being on
holiday with friends

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Moa Alm sources all their food from around their area, we stopped at
local huts for food and drinks on our walks. They also have a cafe that is used
by both local and travellers and they put on social events that again bring
together the local and visiting communities.
