Description of Austria yoga & walking holiday

MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was recently featured in The Guardian, in a list of 'mind, body and spirit breaks'.

This Austria yoga and walking holiday is based in MoaAlm, our home in the heart of East Tyrol and the Alps. We host maximum twelve guests in our lovingly restored mountain farmhouse and chalet in Kals am Grossglockner and, from here we take hikes out into Hohe Tauern National Park, home to Grossglockner, Austria’s highest peak. Which is one of the peaks that you can see from the chalet. Just one of many over 3000m.

This seven day itinerary below is a rough idea of some of the hikes we can undertake. We would be out and about for most of the day, taking picnics with us to enjoy en route, at spots like the Lesach Riegel Hütte or mountain hut, in the Dorfertal valley or taking a gondola up to the high peaks and then finding a magnificent view point on one of the high mountain trails.

Our ethos is to be very relaxed about itineraries, and just work with the interests and experience of the group. However, as this is an adult only trip, most of our guests enjoy incorporating a few long hikes into the itinerary. We do offer multi activity holidays for mixed age groups, by the way, so do chat to us about these options.

Yoga
At MoaAlm we believe that yoga is for everyone, no matter what your age or level of fitness and, as such, our classes are prepared with all of our guests’ needs in mind. The classes generally last 1 hour and you are very welcome to join whether you have never done yoga before or you are a regular practitioner - classes are always tailored to individual needs. The most important thing is that you enjoy it and gain that sense of ‘union’ that the word yoga translates as from its original Sanskrit. We offer a morning yoga class on 5 days of the week, in our studio with the most stunning mountain views. These aim to be energising sessions, getting you ready to hit the hills. Then in the evenings we will have a few more restorative sessions, to stretch and relax after your day of walking.

Food at MoaAlm
As mountain and outdoor lovers, we also love our food at MoaAlm, and the chef here presents our guests with the most delicious homemade and home sourced meals. Slow food is very much part of our ethos, using organic and local ingredients when available. Hearty breakfasts, delicious packed lunches, home baked cakes and copious three course dinners will keep you well stocked for mountain hiking.

Additional activities
You have a free day in the middle of the week to do your own thing. You can just chill at the chalet of course, or if you want to adventure further afield, we can help you sort out a number of optional activities, including mountain biking, rafting, canyoning, rock climbing. Many of our guests also enjoy a day trip into the nearby town of Lienz.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Austria yoga & walking holiday

Environment

MoaAlm is situated at 1800m, it is 2km up the mountain from the settlement of Taurer, a fragile environment which it is our goal to protect.

Some days may involve carrying a picnic on a hike - guests will be actively involved in carrying out waste. Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.

Natural materials have been used in the construction and renovation of MoaAlm where possible and we have been pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. The local tradesmen we employ are highly skilled, particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally-produced felt.

Community

Guests will eat out for lunch on occasion and one evening at locally-run recommended restaurants.

The area also has an excellent ski school and advanced mountain guiding network of instructors that guests may choose to take advantage of. All fresh food and drink will be sourced locally where possible.

We will be employing a team of 4 local full time staff who will receive a generous package of accommodation, food, ski pass and salary. Opportunities will also be available through our staff incentive scheme to participate in training courses annually. This scheme is in place to encourage staff to make this a rewarding full time lifestyle choice that can be sustainable rather than just a seasonal short term option.

Local tradesmen have been involved in the renovation of MoaAlm and we have pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. These tradesmen are highly skilled particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally produced felt.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The stunning scenery and beautifully fresh air.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It’s a great hiking holiday with a really reliable and kind mountain guide and some excellent yoga led by Rosie. The place is pretty remote which has both positives and slight downsides. You get to know everyone in the group pretty well as you’re with them everyday. If you go in the spring/summer, take the ski gondola up to the top, the view is incredible.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, we ate in local places for lunch pretty often. All the food served at MoaAlm is organic.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Pretty good. Fantastic scenery. The food is good (vegetarian) although I didn’t think there was enough of it for the evening meal, when you are most hungry after a day’s activity.

Thank you Anna for your review - we are really happy to hear that you enjoyed your time at MoaAlm... very sorry though that you didn't feel there was enough food in the evenings and hate to think that you were suffering in silence - we will certainly take this on board and ensure that nobody feels they can't ask for more in future if they are still peckish! Very best wishes, Polly

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole experience was memorable. Barbara is an amazing yoga teacher and started each day in a perfect way. The hiking was exceptional, from the
local knowledge to the gorgeous views. Each hike was discussed before hand and terrain, challenge and scenery was incorporated for the groups likes and
needs. Every meal was a taste sensation, again with all needs and tastes catered for using local and fresh produce. The atmosphere created by the staff is
one of comfort, caring and openness which made for a very relaxing and comfortable break. Climbing Grossglockner was an amazing highlight and
toasting marshmellows and chatting by firelight was also a memorable experience.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for lots of fresh air and have a reasonable amount of fitness, so you can enjoy all aspects of the holiday.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Places to eat on our hikes were at local restaurants, so hopefully local businesses benefited from our visit and also the building of the holiday providers business.
As the holiday is actively walking and yoga, hopefully we didn't impact on the environment in a bad way.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The whole holiday was an amazing experience. The only improvement would be to include a hot-tub to relieve achy limbs at the end of long, sumptuous walks
:-) . Thank you to Barbara, Hubert, Nelson, Beatrix, Yvonne and team for putting in so much effort to make a truly memorable holiday,

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Everything was perfect and far better than I could have imagined. The people
of Moa Alm, the accommodation, the food and the stunning walks/ scenery

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This is a great active / relax holiday with great people. Moa Alm is very
unique. The yoga, walks, food and company was great. I love the
communal eating part of the holiday where guests and staff sit together at
the beginning and end of the day over great food. This is more like being on
holiday with friends

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Moa Alm sources all their food from around their area, we stopped at
local huts for food and drinks on our walks. They also have a cafe that is used
by both local and travellers and they put on social events that again bring
together the local and visiting communities.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent -beyond expectations and I have already recommended to friends
