Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Travelling should be about experiencing the world without leaving a negative mark on it and as a B-Corp we are committed to this.Wildlife experiences, such as your safari in Wilpattu National Park, are run by responsible guides who follow strict ethical guidelines to protect Sri Lanka’s incredible biodiversity. On the journey from Ella you will stop at the Elephant Transit Camp in Uda Walawe. Established in 1995 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation, the centre's primary objective is to rehabilitate orphaned elephant calves for ultimate release back into the wild.
This trip also includes a section of the beautiful Pekoe Trail, a network of 300km of walking trails. It was designed to increase the flow of responsible travellers to remote communities here, bringing opportunity to local people. As such, the trail focuses on heritage preservation, environmental sustainability, and economic development. On your route, witness Sri Lanka's stunning natural scenery meeting farmers, tea pluckers and villagers along the way.
People
This holiday isn’t just an adventure for your family—it’s a way to positively impact the people and places you visit. One of the accommodation options is a homestay - Eagles Crest Lodge, located off the beaten track in the Knuckles Mountain Range and a great base for exploring the breathtaking environment. More importantly the lodge also helps support the rural community that live here. The area's residents often live off the land or run small businesses. By staying at the lodge, visitors support not only the owners but also the local guides and farmers too.
You will also stay at Amba Estate - an organic farm-stay social enterprise located in the Uva Highlands. The estate was renovated with the aim to create a model of economic opportunity and now supports over 100 local families. You and your family will have the opportunity to meet these people and this stay will let you connect with the communities here.
Throughout the journey, we work exclusively with independent, locally owned hotels and guides. This means your money stays within Sri Lanka, supporting small businesses and ensuring a more authentic experience. Even your safari in Wilpattu National Park is operated by conservation-conscious guides who prioritise responsible wildlife viewing and employ local trackers, whose knowledge of the land has been passed down for generations.
Tipping is included in the price on our holidays so we can ensure our guides are fairly paid for their incredible work.
