Travel guides

Sri Lanka wildlife
Sri Lanka has peacocks, leopards and elephants, but it has something even bigger, too: the blue whale.
Sri Lanka
For whether you are travelling by train, wildlife watching in rainforests, or just blissing out at the beach.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

This whole itinerary is about connecting and appreciating Sri Lanka's incredible natural beauty.

The first hotel you stay at is the Mudhouse, a unique eco-retreat. Accommodation here is in a variety of uniquely designed, thatched huts built entirely from natural materials that blend harmoniously into the idyllic natural environment. Enjoy a range of organic and healthy Sri Lankan cuisine, much of the produce is grown on-site.

You will also stay at Gal Oya Lodge, nestled in the heart of Gal Oya National Park. It is a beautiful eco-lodge designed to blend in to the natural surroundings whilst minimising the environmental impact. Water here is sourced from a well on the lodge's land and food where possible are sourced from organic producers and an organic farm has also been built on-site.

On day 14 you will visit Uda Walawe National park - designed to provide sanctuary for wildlife displaced during reservoir construction in 1972. The fees for this go back into the experience and you also have the chance to visit the Elephant Transit Camp - the centre's primary objective is to rehabilitate orphaned elephant calves for ultimate release back into the wild.

People

The people are at the heart of what we do and we use local suppliers and guides that are experts in the regions you are visiting. It's incredibly important to us that whilst you are on your holiday you are not simply a bystander - instead you are truly connecting with the people and places you are visiting.

On day 6 you head to the Knuckles Mountain range and your accommodation is Eagles Crest Lodge - a homestay. The lodge is family run and also helps support the rural community that live here. The area's residents often live off the land or run small businesses. Staying here directly benefits the local community and fosters sustainable tourism in the region.

During the stay at Gal Oya Lodge, you'll have the rare opportunity to meet the headman of the last remaining communities of the Veddha tribe and walk with him through his people's ancestral land. The Chief is at home in nature and will show you a different side of the forest, explaining how his tribe lived off the land by pointing out medicinal plants, ancient hunting grounds, and cave dwellings along the path. Though he doesn't speak English, you can chat with the Chief through your guide, who will translate during the walk.

Tipping is also included in the price on our holidays so we can sure that our guides are fairly rewarded for their work.
