This winter activity holiday is hosted at MoaAlm, a unique, beautifully designed mountain home, situated high in the Austrian Alps. With the focus on being ‘RelaxinglyActive’ the holidays we offer are a healthy balance of fresh air, mountain activities and great freshly cooked plant based food. A holiday at MoaAlm Mountain Retreat puts you right at the heart of our warm family atmosphere, with dedicated, enthusiastic staff, and a cosy but stylish living space.
SNOW SHOE HIKING:
We believe there is more to winter in the Alps than skiing. Situated at 1800m, MoaAlm offers a superb base from which to explore the breathtaking mountains of East Tirol on foot. Our local hiking guide will teach you how to use snow shoes before taking you on stunning hikes through beautiful snow laden forests and on high Alpine ridges.
CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
A popular sport in Europe, cross country skiing is done on a relatively flat course and is a really fun way to explore the valleys. Our guide is experienced at teaching beginners how to cross country ski, and we can guarantee you will be laughing your socks off as you learn how to glide through the snow. No previous skiing experience is required, just a sense of adventure!
DOWNHILL SKIING AND SKI TOURING:
MoaAlm is situated on the edge of the GG resort in Kals am Grossglockner. A beautiful resort, it offers a perfect mixture or wide open slopes and windy forest runs perfect for all levels. It is possible to ski from MoaAlm to the ski lift if you are an experienced off piste skier, otherwise we will give you a lift to and from the resort.
FOOD:
We are passionate about healthy living and reducing our impact on the environment. Therefore included in your holiday are six three course evening meals which are entirely plant based. Our in house chef creates seasonal menus and our food is organic and as locally sourced as possible. We also offer a delicious, organic breakfast and freshly baked cakes with organic tea and coffee on a daily basis.
YOGA:
Every holiday with us includes five morning and five evening yoga classes in our in-house yoga studio with panoramic mountain views. At MoaAlm we believe that yoga is for everyone, no matter what your age or level of fitness and, as such, our classes are prepared with all of our guests in mind.
ABOUT THE AREA
We are situated on the edge of the Hohe Tauren National Park underneath Austria's highest mountain, Großglockner. This means we have a unique opportunity to spot rare wildlife such as Ibex on an almost daily basis. Our local guide is extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna around MoaAlm and will be able to tell you about the unique Alpine species you will see. Our local village Kals is still a traditional Alpine village, where many of the residents graze animals on the high alpine pastures.
MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was recently featured in The Guardian, in a list of 'mind, body and spirit breaks'.

Responsible tourism
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Some days may involve carrying a picnic on a hike or ski touring trip - guests will be actively involved in carrying out waste. Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.
Given our surroundings, we are very conscious of the need to preserve natural beauty and heat as efficiently, and sustainably, as possible. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.
The Impacts of this Trip
Guests will eat out for lunch on occasion and one evening at local recommended restaurants.
The area also has an excellent ski school and advanced mountain guiding network of instructors that guests may choose to take advantage of. All fresh food and drink and will be sourced locally where possible.
We will be employing a team of 4 full time staff who will receive a generous package of accommodation, food, ski pass and salary. Opportunities will be also be available through our staff incentive scheme to participate in training courses annually. This scheme is in place to encourage staff to make this a rewarding full time lifestyle choice that can be sustainable rather than just a seasonal short term option.
Local tradesmen have been involved in the renovation of MoaAlm and we have pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. These tradesmen are highly skilled particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally produced felt.

our community and to have as little impact as possible on our local environment. We try to do as much as possible to reduce our carbon footprint, all of
which you can read about on our website. We are very happy you enjoyed your activities with us, and like to think we are very clear with our guests from
our initial email contact, exactly what activities we offer. Since your review, we have reviewed this, and added even more detail to the initial information we
send, as well as our advert. Being in such a remote mountain location, our activities do have to change depending on the weather, but our guests love the
variety we offer.

Where to start...the setting of Moaalm itself is quite something; the landscape around it, and especially the snow-shoeing near the foot of Grossglockner in
the heart of the Austrian Alps!

They have an organic produce delivery set up; the amazing hot tub is wood-fire; most of the activities are on foot; and there is a weekly 'rodeling night' when
locals and tourists can gather for a drink, enjoy an easy meal, and rodel down Moaalm's private, hilly 3km road with a headtorch!

Absolutely outstanding.
