Description of Austria snow shoeing holiday

In January 2018 MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was featured by The Guardian as one of the best retreats in the world for mind, body and spirit breaks.

This week long Austria snow shoeing holiday is a small group tour, fully guided, during the months of March and April. Ours is a family run business, and we host guests in our lovingly restored mountain farmhouse and chalet in Kals am Grossglockner in the East Tirol. From here, we have views out across the Hohe Tauern National Park, home to Grossglockner, Austria’s highest peak. We are very proud of our little spot in this Tyrolean region, where we are surrounded by peaks over 3000m.

Snowshoeing isn’t about conquering peaks of course, but about enjoying winter sports in a low impact way, and it fits in very much with our ethos which is all about relaxingly active holidays, slow travel and slow food. Enjoying landscapes and culture as much as challenging yourself physically. We include some yoga every day on this trip, so that you can wake up with the most stunning mountain views to inspire you to get out there on the hills.

We propose the itinerary below for this week of snowshoeing, but we believe in adapting our adventures according to the interests and needs of our small group. And also to the weather conditions, of course.

We can sleep 12-18 guests, in ensuite rooms all with mountain views. Our terrace is also a favourite place to hang out and breathe in that mountain air with a cold beer or a hot chocolate. You also won’t go hungry, as we pride ourselves on healthy organic food, using locally sourced produce from our own small farming community, whenever possible.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

No Snow?
Our holidays are all about looking at the options of exploring the mountains daily to best suit the weather conditions. We have a indoor yoga space for morning classes and everyday we offer an alternative to piste skiing. We offer daily snowshoe hiking or winter hikes, dependent on conditions. We also offer cross country skiing, which is weather permitting and not reliant on snow making facilities.

Responsible tourism: Austria snow shoeing holiday

Environment

MoaAlm is situated at 1800m, it is 2km up the mountain from the settlement of Taurer. MoaAlm is only accessible with our own vehicle or by foot/snowshoe or ski. We will provide pick up and drop off on arrival/departure to your vehicle or your airport transfer in Lienz. Daily transport will involve a combination of snowshoe, ski and toboggan - far more suited to our goal of enjoying and preserving the natural beauty of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Some days may involve carrying a picnic on a hike or ski touring trip - guests will be actively involved in carrying out waste. Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.

Given our surroundings, we are very conscious of the need to preserve natural beauty and heat as efficiently, and sustainably, as possible. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.

Community

Guests will eat out for lunch on occasion and one evening at local recommended restaurants.

The area also has an excellent ski school and advanced mountain guiding network of instructors that guests may choose to take advantage of. All fresh food and drink and will be sourced locally where possible.

We will be employing a team of 4 full time staff who will receive a generous package of accommodation, food, ski pass and salary. Opportunities will be also be available through our staff incentive scheme to participate in training courses annually. This scheme is in place to encourage staff to make this a rewarding full time lifestyle choice that can be sustainable rather than just a seasonal short term option.

Local tradesmen have been involved in the renovation of MoaAlm and we have pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. These tradesmen are highly skilled particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally produced felt.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Where to start...the setting of Moaalm itself is quite something; the landscape around it, and especially the snow-shoeing near the foot of Grossglockner in
the heart of the Austrian Alps!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't be afraid to have a go at all the activities on offer; the team are experts in what they do - from yoga to winter pursuits and importantly, they are understanding and accommodating to all needs. Their warmth and enthusiasm are contagious!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

They have an organic produce delivery set up; the amazing hot tub is wood-fire; most of the activities are on foot; and there is a weekly 'rodeling night' when
locals and tourists can gather for a drink, enjoy an easy meal, and rodel down Moaalm's private, hilly 3km road with a headtorch!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely outstanding.
