1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Our day in Petra.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
1. Remember that Jordan is a very Muslim country, so respect its conservatism and that it is often not possible to obtain a drink of alcohol.
2. Be aware of Ramadan; many restaurants/cafes may have restricted opening.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, hopefully. It is clear that much of Jordan has been adversely affected by the Covid restrictions imposed of Jordan itself and tourism generally. It was particularly good to stay at the local lodges at Azraq and Dana.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Very rewarding trip. Good weather throughout (Spring was a good time to visit). Mixture of wonderful scenery/architectural sites and nature reserves. Pity about so much litter everywhere!
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
During this program you will spend two nights at the RSCN Azraq Wetland Reserve. Established in 1978 to conserve the unique oasis located in the heart of Jordan's Eastern desert. A variety of birds stop by the reserve each year, for a short rest, staying for the winter or to breed in the wetland. The Azraq Wetland Reserve is the only oasis in the Arabian Desert that can sustain itself with a self replenishing system. Even more reason to make sure every effort is made to conserve this reserve. In the 80's this reserve almost dried up because of its water being used for agricultural reasons. In 1994 RSCN began a rescue mission and they managed to restore a significant portion of the wetland. They still strive to increase the water levels which is an ongoing struggle. By visiting this Wetland Reserve and spending 2 nights at its Lodge, you help conserving the site because conservation fees are included in the entry tickets.
While travelling through Jordan we ask you kindly to take extra care of the environment by not leaving any waste behind and by limiting your use of water.
People
We believe it is important to contribute to the local communities. We do this by hiring local employees. The team at our office consists of local people and so are our drivers and guides. And during this tour you will be accompanied by an English speaking Jordanian guide who has experience with bird watching. Together you will spot lots of birds. He will guide you through Jordan and show you all the highlights. He will also show you were you can buy souvenirs made by local artists. So you can support the Jordanian people even more. All the people we work with are fairly compensated for their time. In our eyes it is an important part from travelling responsible.Interaction between the local community and the tourists will also give all involved parties fun memories to look back on. It is another reason why the services provided to you will mainly be done by locals. So we can make sure that local communities throughout Jordan will benefit from your holiday. Cultural exchange is a beautiful thing and we can all learn from each other during these precious moments.
You also have the option to attend the Petra Kitchen cooking course. Here you learn how to cook traditional Jordanian food alongside local women, giving them the opportunity to help support their families
