Description of South African safaris for families with teenagers

This impressive two-week family safari in South Africa will take you on a round-trip from Johannesburg incorporating many of the country’s major cultural and wildlife hot spots, including a Zulu village in Kosi Bay and the legendary confines of Kruger National Park.

Guided tours of Soweto signal the start of the tour where teenage members of your family will get an eye-opening experience as to how young people live and work in South Africa’s townships.

After leaving J’burg your family safari in South Africa heads off into the wilds as you come face to face with the herds of buffalo, elephants and giraffe that inhabit one of Africa’s oldest recorded nature reserves, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park.

After spending a couple of days keeping a keen eye out for leopards and lions in between camping under the stars, kayaking through mangroves and snorkelling over coral reefs, you’ll head out of South Africa and into Hlane National Park in Swaziland.

With Big Five tours in Kruger National Park and self-guided hiking and optional white-water-rafting in the realm of Blyde River Canyon, this two week family safari in South Africa finally draws to a conclusion with the chance to extend the tour to take in the sights of Cape Town always a nice addition to keep teens and parents happy for at least another three days.

Please note: this type of holiday is ideal for families with teenage children and will suit anyone who’s in good health with a solid sense of adventure. We do require a doctor’s certificate for anyone over the age of 65 and please be aware that the minimum age for this family safari in South Africa is 11yrs.

Holiday type
This trip is for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re travelling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount off the price of their trip. Travelling our way is a bit like travelling with a group of friends. Made up of 3-5 like-minded families, the kids tend to hit it off on these trips straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

Our family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places, but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. So we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

Carbon reduction

Environment

Responsible mission: As adventure travellers we relish and celebrate the diversity of the world. We also recognise our obligation to protect the environments that we explore. Our aim is to tread lightly, whilst contributing to maintain the world’s culture and nature, and most importantly to engage the help of all our customers to utilise the potential of tourism as a tool to aid sustainable development. We believe that responsible travellers are welcome in the places that they visit.

On this trip: We travel in small groups so have a minimal impact on the environment as we go. On this trip we use a local agent from South Africa, locally owned hotels, local leaders. Not only does this mean that more of the money we generate stays within the community, but their local knowledge and expertise helps us to better understand the environment in which we are travelling, whilst reinforcing within the local community that preserving this environment is both important and worthwhile.

Responsible code: Being Responsible is at the heart of everything our company does - full details of our code can be found on our website. The local supplier for this trip will promote our responsible travel code throughout your adventure. You will also receive specific information on this trip’s responsibility in your trip notes.

Giving something back: We have a foundation that collects the funds that you donate to us to support our projects. All our customers are invited to make a £1 per person contribution to the foundation at the time of booking. We will match every contribution that you make with our own £1. You as a customer choose where these funds are used from a shortlist of nominated projects – so it really is YOUR foundation.

Partnerships: As a company we support The Travel Foundation, a UK charity that has been established to promote responsible travel practises throughout the whole of the travel industry. We also work with a number of charity partners who work in the destinations that we visit; including Friends of Conservation and Born Free Foundation. We partner with many small grassroots projects throughout the destinations that we visit - they all share our responsible vision.

Community

On this trip: Our Teen Adventure visits the township of Soweto on a guided tour. This eye-opening start to the trip gives an insight into the real-life struggle in South Africa. You’ll also visit a traditional Zulu village near the Mkuzi Game Reserve and have a chance to interact with the local community. Educating the younger generation about the people and animals of the region they are visiting is a vital part of future of responsible travel.

We also support a project to take disadvantaged local children to game parks so that they can experience a safari for themselves. Our local agent works in conjunction with the SOS children’s home in Ennerdale Johannesburg. The children spend a weekend in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve giving them a chance to see some of the wildlife indigenous to South Africa. It also introduces the children to conservation issues and hopefully will encourage some of them to go on and study conservation and the natural world in the future.
