This nine-day journey through Nigeria and Ghana uses shared overland road transfers for several journeys between destinations, including Lagos to Badagry, onward to Abeokuta, and travel between Accra and Elmina in Ghana. Traveling together by road allows the group to travel between these destinations in a shared vehicle while experiencing the landscapes, towns and communities along the route.

The itinerary also includes opportunities to explore destinations on foot. Guests can walk the canopy boardwalk at Lagos' Lekki Conservation Centre, explore the Lekki International Craft Market and Accra Arts and Crafts Centre, and walk around historic sites including Elmina Castle and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Guests who choose the optional Kakum National Park excursion can also walk along the suspended canopy walkway.

Before departure, we can provide practical advice on comparing flight emissions when booking flights to and from West Africa. Travelers can use flight comparison tools to compare available routes and emissions information.

Park and conservation-site entrance fees are paid to the organisations responsible for managing the sites we visit. At Lekki Conservation Centre, guests can learn about the site's natural environment while following the guidance provided by the centre. Guests visiting Kakum National Park can learn about the rainforest environment and wildlife from local guides and rangers.

Throughout the trip, travelers are asked to follow guidance when visiting natural areas, remain on designated paths where required, avoid disturbing wildlife and follow the instructions of local guides. Before nature-based activities, our guides brief travelers on appropriate behaviour while visiting these sites.

People

We use local accommodation providers, restaurants, guides, activity providers and other businesses wherever possible during the tour.

The accommodation used in Ghana includes The Pelican Hotel in Accra and Ridge Royal Hotel in Elmina. In Nigeria, the tour uses Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos. These establishments provide accommodation for travelers during the tour.

Shopping and market visits are included in the itinerary, giving travelers opportunities to purchase locally made products and interact with local artisans and traders. These include visits to the Lekki International Craft Market in Lagos and the Accra Arts and Crafts Centre. Guests can browse products such as locally produced art, textiles, jewellery and traditional crafts.

The itinerary also includes a visit to the Nike Art Gallery and Cultural Centre in Lagos, providing travelers with an opportunity to learn about Nigerian art and culture. The farewell dinner in Accra takes place at a local restaurant.

Local Guides and Community Experiences:

The trip is guided and operated by local professionals in Nigeria and Ghana. Cultural tour guides based in Lagos and Accra accompany travelers during their time in each country and provide information about the history, heritage and communities visited along the route.

The itinerary includes cultural and heritage experiences such as the Badagry Slave Route, the Fihankra Naming Ceremony at Elmina and cultural sites in Accra. Where appropriate, travelers meet local historians, traditional chiefs, ceremony officiants and community members and have opportunities to learn directly from people connected to the places they visit.
