Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Carbon Reduction. This trip includes several days where guests use walking as part of the experience, reducing reliance on vehicles. On day four, guests hike Sipi Falls; on day seven, they explore the Narus Valley; and on day eleven, they climb to the top of Murchison Falls. These activities rely solely on human energy and avoid fuel use, which lowers emissions compared to motor transport. Many of the accommodations selected for this safari also use renewable energy. For example, The Boma Hotel operates solar water heaters for showers, while Kara Tunga and Rafiki Lodge Sipi rely on solar panels for electricity. These systems generate power without releasing greenhouse gases, reducing the impact associated with conventional electricity generation.
Environment and Wildlife:
Several lodges on this trip grow their own food, reducing the need for long distance transport of produce. The Boma Hotel cultivates salads and vegetables in a nearby garden, while Kara Tunga and Karamoja Safari Camp also grow part of their supplies. Organic waste is composted to create fertilizer, supporting local food production. The safari includes entry to national parks and reserves such as Pian Upe, Kidepo Valley, and Murchison Falls. Entrance fees contribute to conservation and community development, with portions of the revenue directed to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and livelihood programs. This creates incentives for local communities to support wildlife protection and sustainable land use.
People
Local Economy Kara Tunga, one of the accommodations used on this trip, runs Karamoja Workshops that connect travellers with local craftsmen. These workshops encourage cultural exchange, help artisans expand their markets, and increase their income. On day eight, guests visit a local community, interact with residents, and learn about their traditions and daily life. Such activities provide direct support to local economies and preserve cultural heritage.Employment, Inclusivity and Diversity Most of the people employed during this trip are Ugandans, many from the local communities surrounding the destinations. Park rangers, porters, and guides are engaged to lead activities and share knowledge of their culture and environment. At sites such as Sipi Falls and Murchison Falls, local expertise ensures authentic experiences while providing income opportunities. This approach allows communities to benefit directly from tourism and strengthens their role in protecting natural and cultural resources.
