Can I give more than 5 stars? It was phenomenal! The only thing I would have changed is to stay longer. There were so many memorable parts of my visit to Uganda! It was packed with exciting and enriching experiences. The close encounters - dare I say, connection -with the mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, as well as the deeply personal and moving visit to the Batwa community were among the most impactful. I was also thrilled and delighted by the golden monkeys. The itinerary was thoughtfully assembled to build from one day/activity to the next, ensuring we had the opportunity to learn about the history, wildlife and cultural dynamics and build fitness in advance of each new adventure. CARBON REDUCTIONFlying into Rwanda, participants will take an overland transfer to Uganda rather than taking another flight. By opting for an overland journey, we reduce our carbon footprint and embrace the opportunity to experience the stunning landscapes and vibrant cultures along the route. Our tour group is small, so only one shared vehicle is needed for any driving.
During the tour, you'll stay in four accommodations that all work to reduce the consumption of natural resources such as water, paper and energy. You'll stay at an eco-friendly wilderness lodge powered by alternative energy sources such as biogas and solar energy. You'll also stay at a family-run, sustainable Inn where you'll participate in some of their eco-projects, which benefit both the environment and the local community.
All food on the tour is locally sourced and seasonal, and vegetarian and vegan options are available for all meals.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
The tour is centred around wildlife conservation efforts in Uganda. A portion of the fee constitutes a conservation donation, and all permits contribute to the preservation of endangered and vulnerable species, such as mountain gorillas and their habitat.
Travellers on the tour will gain profound insights into conservation efforts, wildlife protection, and sustainable practices. The activities they take part in also help pave the way for researchers and studies when the wildlife is completely habituated. The tour raises awareness about critical environmental issues, inspiring broader support for conservation initiatives and encouraging responsible travel practices worldwide.
Through interactions with local communities, the tour units people in a shared commitment to preserving Uganda's natural and cultural treasures. While undertaking gorilla treks and other wildlife habituation experiences with animals in their natural habitat, volunteers are led by local experts and follow IUCN guidelines surrounding gorilla and wildlife tourism. This includes wearing face masks in the presence of gorillas to protect them from illness.

LOCAL ECONOMYAll accommodations on this tour are proudly locally owned, ensuring an authentic and immersive experience. One highlight of the trip is a stay at a charming family-run country inn, known not only for its hospitality but also for its dedication to sustainability. This inn actively supports the surrounding community through a variety of eco-projects, including providing locals with job opportunities and sustainable products from its eco-farm and educating underprivileged communities, especially children.
The guides are all members of the local community, bringing a wealth of knowledge and a personal touch to the tour. You will have the opportunity to visit a range of establishments that prioritise the employment of local Ugandan staff. These include our carefully selected accommodations, local community ventures, numerous stalls and shops, restaurants, and markets throughout the trip.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
All guides and accommodation staff are from Uganda and are part of the local community. They are compensated well above the minimum wage.
This tour and our gorilla project have provided alternative income opportunities for Indigenous people and those previously living in poverty. Some guides are former poachers who now earn a fair and sustainable living, contributing to both conservation efforts and the local economy.
