Planet
The highlight of this trip is mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, located in southwestern Uganda. Since Entebbe International Airport is far from Bwindi, many travellers choose to fly for about two hours instead of driving for approximately eight hours. To reduce travel time and emissions, we recommend starting the trip from Kigali, Rwanda, which is only about a five hour drive to Bwindi. This option also allows guests to explore Kigali city before continuing to Uganda. On the third day, guests trek through the forest for one to five hours depending on gorilla locations, making walking a central part of the experience. Walking avoids reliance on motorized transport and reduces fuel use compared to vehicles.Environment and Wildlife: Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, one of the accommodations used on this trip, operates with solar energy and rainwater harvesting systems. Solar power provides electricity without releasing greenhouse gases, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The lodge also supplies water in jars and encourages guests to bring refillable bottles, minimizing single use plastic waste. This approach reduces pollution and supports conservation efforts. Park fees collected during visits are distributed to support community projects, park management, and ecological monitoring, ensuring that tourism contributes directly to wildlife protection and local development.
People
Local Economy Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is locally owned by Lydia, a Ugandan entrepreneur who began the lodge as a campsite in 2007. She involved the community in its development, and many of the same locals continue to manage and run daily operations. This provides steady employment and strengthens community ties to tourism.Employment, Inclusivity and Diversity: Primate World Safaris employs certified local guides who are trained under the Uganda Safari Guide Association. These guides share knowledge of the environment and encourage responsible visitor behaviour, helping protect ecosystems and wildlife. During gorilla trekking, visitors hire local porters, each paid a minimum of $20 per trek. This wage provides direct income to community members and ensures that tourism benefits extend to those living closest to the forest.
