Planet
Our 12-day Family Vacation in Athens and Western Greece is carefully designed to minimize carbon emissions while maximizing authentic experiences. Internal travel avoids unnecessary flights, utilizing a fast boat from Zakynthos to the Peloponnese and private road transfers, reducing the overall carbon footprint when compared to individual car rentals or additional flights. Several days prominently feature human-powered activities, including walking tours in Athens (Days 1–3), sea kayaking in Pylos (Day 8), SUP (Day 8), and hiking to Polylimnio Waterfalls or Navarino Bay (Day 9), with a minimum of four days dedicated to low-impact, human-powered exploration. Our guides provide tips to travelers about reducing their own carbon impact, encouraging eco-friendly behaviors such as using refillable water bottles and supporting local, plant-forward cuisine, widely available on the trip. The picnic in Navarino Bay and most meals emphasize locally sourced and seasonal produce, including organic fruits and vegetables, fresh breads, and Greek cheese, supporting local farmers and reducing food miles. Where possible, accommodations are encouraged to source energy from renewable providers and to minimize energy and water waste.ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
This itinerary has been crafted to foster a positive environmental impact. Our accommodation partners are selected for their commitment to reducing environmental footprints through practices such as water conservation, recycling, plastic reduction, and use of local, sustainable building materials. Many accommodations promote biodiversity by supporting local flora and fauna or hosting small-scale landscape restoration, such as planting native species and maintaining pollinator-friendly gardens. The trip includes entrance fees to culturally and naturally significant areas, such as Ancient Olympia, Mycenae, and Epidaurus, with these funds directly supporting conservation and site maintenance. Excursions such as guided hiking in protected areas, sea kayaking, and visits to Zakynthos—home to the endangered loggerhead sea turtle—are conducted with strong codes of conduct to avoid disturbing wildlife. Expert local nature guides provide education on minimizing visitor impact and respecting fragile ecosystems. We advise guests on leaving no trace and responsibly spotting wildlife, while also supporting the local honey farm in Olympia, which fosters pollinator health in the region.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYOur trip prioritizes positive contributions to the Greek local economy by collaborating exclusively with locally owned accommodations, from family-run hotels in Athens and Nafplio to unique regional resorts and guesthouses. Experiences like the Olympia honey farm visit and hands-on pottery workshops directly support small local businesses and artisans. Throughout the trip, guests are guided by local experts—historians, culinary specialists, and adventure operators—ensuring that their spending stays within the community. Visits to central food markets in Athens, the sampling of artisan foods, and the encouragement to purchase from local producers and craftspeople further stimulate economic growth in the regions visited. We consistently seek out vendors that implement sustainable practices and uphold strong community values.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
More than 90% of the experts, guides, and operational staff involved are Greek, including many from the specific localities visited during the trip. Baboo Travel and its in-destination partners ensure that opportunities are extended to women, youth, and individuals from marginalized backgrounds, particularly through partnerships with women-led craft cooperatives and independent guides. All staff are paid at or above the national minimum wage, and we maintain a strong commitment to diverse, inclusive hiring practices regardless of gender, race, or orientation. Our tours are LGBTQ+ friendly and are flexible to accommodate guests with limited mobility, vision, or hearing—where feasible, we provide advance accessibility information and adapt experiences accordingly. By promoting respectful, inclusive, and fair employment as a local economic driver, we help nurture thriving communities and meaningful cultural exchange.
