Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION

We only use vehicles where absolutely necessary on the trip as we believe that not only is the best way to see Peru by foot, rail and boat it also helps us reduce our carbon emissions. In areas such as Cuzco and Arequipa walking tours are encouraged over driven ones.

Peru has a magnificent rail system that caters for tourists and locals alike and is one we use frequently as a preferred option to bus or private transport.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Joint initiatives through our partners have committed to protecting and beginning to restore 50 million hectares of Peruvian Amazon land by 2030. An account of self-reported progress from private sector partners reveals how far they have come since December 2014 8.2 million hectars of degraded land under restoration – 14.6 million hectares are in new conservation areas.

Each passenger receives a donation certificate for their contribution to protecting forests in Madre de Dios (Peruvian Amazon), a project implemented by a specialized NGO and supervised by the Peruvian government.

Inkaterra is our Puerto Maldonado property. It has pioneered ecotourism in Peru since 1975, and is currently renowned as a world leader in sustainable development. To underscore cultural and natural virtues, the brand works under a holistic approach that generates added value in rural areas: it encourages scientific research, whilst contributing to biodiversity conservation, education and the economic growth of local communities.

LOCAL ECONOMY

We work with a non-profit association founded in 2007 called Wings in Peru whose goal is to contribute the development of community-based tourism and sustainable tourism. They work with multidisciplinary teams, manage public sector projects and manage international organizations' funds. They create significant impacts in local communities and encourage best practices in the tourism sector and the company's staff.

In 2008, the Mullak’as Misminay community was interested in offering tourism services and we wanted to help them do it . Families were trained and the infrastructure of their homes was implemented. They were offered access to the market with the support of our clients, thus ensuring the success of its business model.

Thanks to the efficient management and projects carried out in the community, local families have seen significant improvements in their quality of life, income, health, nutrition and education. This, in turn, has reduced youth migration and empowered women.

From the work produced and funds raised just through our clients, we were able to make the following changes in rural schools: Over 12 schools 1410 students were supplied with 5000 food rations from 6 biogardens 2 school kitchens, 2 garden kitchens, 2 school bathrooms.

Misminay families have a shortage of drinkable water, which causes diverse health problems. A three-party agreement was signed between two municipalities and our partners, with the aim to supply drinkable water to the community’s families. We managed and co-financed the construction of a water gallery, which stores rainwater that has been previously filtered by Wañinmarca hill.
