Reviews
1 Reviews of Atlantic Ring cycling tour, Portugal
4 out of 5 stars
Reviewed on 31 May 2026 by Nick Warrick
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Cycling downhill from Viseu for the best part was of 2 days through wonderful countryside. The first 2 days cycling uphill to Viseu were harder work, but no less beautiful.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Cycle lots before your holiday to ensure your bum is saddle ready. Take care when looking at your gps when cycling on cobbled streets.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Not really!
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Very professionally organised and most enjoyable.

LOW-EMISSION TRAVELOur Atlantic Ring Route showcases Central Portugal's natural and cultural heritage through human-powered travel. As a circular cycling route, the Atlantic Ring lets you explore by bike instead of motorised transport. By guiding small groups on gravel or touring bikes through coastal paths, river valleys, and historical towns, we avoid the local pressure associated with mass tourism vehicles.
Throughout the Atlantic Ring Route, cyclists pass through protected areas, such as the Mondego and Vouga river valleys, learning about local ecosystems and regional conservation projects. Travellers are given reusable water bottles and encouraged to avoid single-use plastics, and can choose personal care products certified with the EU Ecolabel.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Central Portugal's forests have faced substantial challenges following severe wildfires in recent years. Along the route, cyclists learn about local efforts to restore native species such as chestnut and cork oak, and about fire prevention in the region.
In partnership with local municipalities, we raise awareness among cyclists about biodiversity restoration and fire prevention. Guests can take part in hands-on planting activities in designated municipal restoration zones, when scheduled, learning firsthand about the management and preservation of Central Portugal's native landscapes.

LOCAL ECONOMYOur route design supports regional economies by prioritizing direct partnerships with locally owned accommodations, family-run restaurants, and traditional artisans along the Atlantic Ring Route. From the Atlantic coast to the inland cities of Coimbra and Viseu, we channel tourism spend directly into the communities we visit.
These local partnerships also connect travelers with the regions cultural heritage through resident guides and hosts who share the history, traditions, and gastronomy of Central Portugal.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY
Following the severe 2017 wildfires in Central Portugal, we focused our itinerary planning on helping inland communities generate year-round tourism income. The Atlantic Ring Route integrates visits to community-led recovery projects and gives cyclists the chance to learn about municipal reforestation initiatives along the trail.
To minimize our physical and social footprint on rural communities, we strictly limit group sizes. By choosing active mobility and partnering with local businesses, we provide an immersive travel experience designed to respect local cultures, reduce congestion in small villages, and share the economic benefits of tourism across Central Portugal.
