CARBON REDUCTION
At Sosian Lodge, sustainability is a key focus. The lodge employs solar energy for power and water heating, ensuring minimal environmental impact despite its remote location. The use of solar power helps reduce dependence on non-renewable energy sources while also minimising energy consumption.
In line with Sosian's commitment to sustainability, locally sourced food is prioritised, reducing food miles and supporting local farmers. By buying fresh, local produce, Sosian helps sustain the surrounding communities while offering guests a true taste of the region.
Sosian Lodge encourages guests to bring reusable water bottles to reduce single-use plastic. Water stations are available throughout the property to ensure easy access to filtered water, helping you stay hydrated while minimising waste during your stay.
To further reduce carbon emissions, internal flights are avoided, and the journey between locations is made by vehicle, limiting the need for air travel and reducing your carbon footprint.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Sosian Lodge operates within a private wildlife conservancy, where all park fees and contributions go directly towards conservation efforts. This funding supports wildlife protection and sustainable management of the land, benefiting both the environment and the local community.
The conservancy is home to a rich diversity of species, including endangered wild dogs, and efforts to preserve this habitat have contributed to maintaining Laikipia’s unique biodiversity. Sosian Lodge is committed to responsible wildlife viewing, ensuring minimal disturbance to the animals while maximising the conservation impact of every visit.
By staying at Sosian, you are directly contributing to the protection of over 24,000 acres of pristine wilderness, helping preserve not only the land but also the livelihoods of the local community who actively participate in the conservation efforts.

People

Local economy

Sosian Lodge, located in Kenya's Laikipia Plateau, is deeply committed to supporting and uplifting the local communities through various initiatives:

Education Support
The lodge supports a local school attended by 330 children, contributing to infrastructure improvements, providing supplies, and offering scholarships for secondary education

Healthcare Initiatives
Sosian actively supports the local health clinic by contributing to nurses’ salaries and assisting with medical training, focusing on immunisation, basic health issues, and family planning

Community Engagement
The lodge works closely with the local Laikipiak Maasai and Samburu tribes by providing employment and allowing grazing during times of drought. Additionally, Sosian has formed a water association with local communities to conserve the river and swamp on the ranch and has initiated a tree nursery.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY, AND DIVERSITY
Sosian Lodge employs approximately 120 individuals from neighbouring communities, providing them with training in tourism, ranching, and conservation. This employment supports around 700–800 people, offering stable livelihoods in areas where job opportunities are limited due to the semi-arid environment.

Through these initiatives, Sosian Lodge not only offers guests an authentic safari experience but also plays a vital role in enhancing the well-being and sustainability of the local communities.
