Description of Liguria train holiday, Ponente to Levante, Italy

The lovely Italian Riviera opens up to you on this fantastic trip by train. Spend 12 days in the Liguria region, travelling from Borgio Verezzi to Cinque Terre. The latter is famous, the stops along the way are less well-known to international travellers but full of beauty all the same.

This trip is a lovely opportunity to explore the colourful coastal towns that border the gorgeous Ligurian Sea, including Genoa, Portofino and Cinque Terre. In Genoa, you’ll be taken under the wing of a local photographer who will show you hidden corners of this famous port city.

You’ll enjoy the nature, too: stop for a vineyard agri-picnic, guided hikes in Portofino Park and the Borgio Verezzi Caves, go kayaking or paddle boarding, and even spend time whale watching and snorkelling with a marine biologist.

This trip involves short train rides between towns in the region. Each day you’ll board a train to reach a new place. You’ll also explore by boat to reach San Fruttuoso – a cove hiding a secluded monastery. Along the way you’ll be staying in locally-owned guest houses and bed and breakfasts, ensuring you’re well rested for each day’s miniature adventure.

CARBON REDUCTION
This trip is designed to minimise carbon emissions through a combination of train travel, walking, and boat excursions, significantly reducing the need for private or long-distance car transfers. Most of the itinerary is connected by regional trains along the Ligurian coast, from Borgio Verezzi to Genoa, Camogli, and the Cinque Terre, promoting a slower, low-impact way of exploring the region.
Accommodations are locally owned guesthouses and B&Bs within walking distance of train stations and local trails, which encourages guests to move on foot and avoid taxis or hire cars. Several properties have implemented eco-friendly practices such as solar energy use, recycling, plastic reduction, and locally sourced food. Activities are planned to align with sustainability goals, including marine experiences led by biologists using low-impact observation methods and citizen-science hikes in protected parks. The entire itinerary embodies a “light-footprint” philosophy, connecting travellers with nature while limiting environmental disturbance.

ENVIRONMENT & WILDLIFE
This holiday directly supports conservation and responsible tourism through partnerships with marine biologists and local environmental guides in areas like the Pelagos Sanctuary for Mediterranean marine mammals and Portofino Natural Park. Participation in these guided activities contributes to ongoing data collection and awareness for marine biodiversity.
Guests are encouraged to respect ecosystems, reduce waste, refill water bottles, and stay on marked trails. The itinerary includes visits to national parks and UNESCO sites, where entrance fees support habitat protection and maintenance of sustainable trails. Many experiences such as the vineyard agri-picnic, hiking the Path of Infinity, and exploring the Abbey of San Fruttuoso, foster a deep appreciation for natural and cultural landscapes, promoting long-term environmental stewardship.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY
We place community benefit at the heart of this holiday, ensuring the money you spend remains in the local economy and supports inclusive employment opportunities. All of the accommodations are locally-owned and family-run rather than international chains, and many of the activities engage small artisan enterprises and independent producers. We hire guides who live in the destinations, speak the language and share local heritage, maximising meaningful employment for community members.
Our guests are encouraged to shop at village markets, buy handcrafted goods and dine in locally-owned restaurants, ensuring a genuine cultural exchange and equitable distribution of tourism benefit.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
All staff and partners are paid at least the local minimum wage (it is compulsory in Italy), and we follow a clear workplace diversity strategy to ensure equal employment regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality.
This trip is fully LGBTQ+ friendly, and we welcome all travelers to participate in safe, inclusive, and culturally respectful experiences
