Description of Norwegian Fjord and coast road trip holiday

This Norwegian fjord and coast road trip holiday begins and ends in Bergen, looping through some of western Norway’s most varied landscapes, from deep fjords to exposed coastline. After time to settle into the city's rhythms, you collect your car and head inland along Sognefjorden, where steep green mountains plunge into still waters. Reaching the quieter reaches of Lustrafjord, the pace slows, with time to explore villages and take in the sense of space that defines this part of Norway.

From Skjolden, a brief switch to two wheels along the Romantic Road introduces a gentler side of the fjord landscape. Cycling between small settlements, historic sites and waterside viewpoints, you eventually reach Urnes Stave Church, one of Norway’s oldest wooden buildings. The following day brings a shift in scenery as you travel into a more remote area for a guided glacier hike, crossing a stark, man-made lake by boat before stepping onto ancient ice in a setting visited by very few people.

Continuing west on your self drive journey, the route transitions from fjord to coast, following scenic mountain roads such as Gaularfjellet before arriving in Kalvag. Here, time slows again with a visit to the island of Selja , where a short boat trip leads to the ruins of a monastery steeped in legend. A free day allows for exploration at your own pace, perhaps with the challenging but rewarding walk to Vetvika beach, where mountains meet pale sand and open sea.

Returning to Bergen, you round off the holiday with a guided walk that brings insight into the city’s past and present. Throughout the journey, stays in small, locally owned accommodation and experiences led by regional specialists ensure your visit directly benefits communities beyond the busiest destinations. Travel is by rental car, with electric options available, allowing you to reach more remote areas while reducing the carbon impact of your journey.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION

For this itinerary public transportation will not be conventient and therefore transport is based on driving a car. The rental car will be electric, and recharging will be with green Norwegian energy.

Breakfast buffets always have vegetarian and vegans options available and clearly marked. Restaurants always have vegetarian and vegan options on the menu.

The itinerary is based on only using elecrric car between the destinations, and only international flight to/from the country is necessary.

Electric cars are available for hire.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Each year we donate a precentage of the company surplus to a charity organisation who either helps people or the environment. Last year we donated to an NGO organisation cleaning plastic and litter from beaches and coast lines.

Have you considered adding an opt out conservation fee to each trip for named NGOs? No. We feel adding and opt out conservation fee is not right as it puts an extra economic burden on the traveller already paying for the trip, and we feel giving something back from the company surplus is an overall better solution.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

The accommodation in Bergen is a small locally Bergen owned chain, and the accommodations in Luster and Kalvåg are small scale, family run and locally owned.

We try to select destination that is not receiving the highest amount of travellers and has a local feel, like along the coast and deeper into the fjord areas. Within the destination, we also seek to use local small-scale operators with a focus on sustainability delivering a more authentic experience and also benefiting the local economy.

The glacier hike do contain a RIB boat drive, but this is the only way into the area, and the reward is a place where a local operator brings small groups who are usually the only ones there.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Norways is a very liberal country in general with high equal rights to race, gender, sexual orientation or nationality. All travellers like for example LGBT+ travellers are welcome everywhere.
