This nine day small group holiday makes the perfect introduction to Norway. Travelling by train and by boat you’ll get to experience the country’s coastal scenery as you journey north from the bright lights of Oslo to the darkest of night’s skies over the Lofoten Islands in the Arctic Circle.

There is simply so much to get excited about with a great blend of Viking seafaring heritage and stunning landscapes, especially en route to Trondheim, ensuring you get to experience Norway from a variety of close up perspectives.

Norwegians know what makes their country such a fascinating prospect and this wonderful week away will do its level best to ensure that travellers get to sample the seafood and the scenery that has long been the preserve of poets, artists and wool covered fishing folk.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Norway small group holiday

Environment

When travelling through Scandinavia we use public transport where possible, the most sustainable way of moving around. On this trip we take the train from Oslo to Trondheim and Trondheim to Bodo, we travel by local ferry to the Lofoten Islands, and by public bus to Tromso. Not only is this a very comfortable way of travelling, these journeys also follow very scenic routes and offer a great opportunities to strike up conversations with the local people.

All our leaders are passionate about responsible travel, so our messaging around the importance of environmental issues is always consistent. Our leaders make the effort to teach our passengers about recycling in Scandinavia, which is well ahead of the game in comparison to other European nations. We hope some of our passengers will take these ideas home with them to help improve the environment where they live.

We supply our customers with canvas bags to use throughout the trip and to encourage them to say no to plastic ones. We also suggest the use of refillable water bottles as tap water all over Scandinavia is drinkable.

On our trips we use locally owned and run businesses, such as hotels and restaurants. This way we are able to support the local Scandinavian economy instead of large international chains and corporations.

Community

This trip is run entirely by our European Destination Management Company (or DMC) and they share our values when it comes to responsible travel. The trip is run by local leaders from the region, who are employed and paid in accordance with current industry standards. We also employ local guides where feasible, for instance on the Lofoten Islands where we embark on a guided morning kayaking excursion.

We make sure our small groups take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints. This small group tour has a maximum of 12 participants, meaning that we have a low impact on the communities we visit and are able to ensure that we don’t disrupt or contribute to the displacement of local people.

Our small groups also allows us to stay in family-run hotels and pensions that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to their limited size. We also support small restaurants and cafes.
