Description of Egypt holiday by rail

This nine-day Egypt holiday by rail blends Egypt’s most famous ancient sites with authentic local encounters. You’ll journey from Cairo to Aswan and Luxor by overnight train, waking up to the grand temples and the Valley of the Kings.

Journeying between Egypt’s cities by sleeper train is a low-impact and leisurely means of exploring the country and time on the rails is supplemented by private transfers to get you straight to the sites.

You’ll be accompanied by local guides throughout your adventure, and their personal and authoritative insights will not only help you connect with the country, but with its people too.

With a good balance of guided sightseeing and free time, you’ll be able to fully absorb each place. There’s time to explore neighbourhoods, markets and historic districts and gain a deeper understanding of life in modern Egypt, while supporting local businesses and services.

This trip uses sleeper trains between Cairo, Aswan and Luxor, giving travellers a practical way to travel between the main destinations while avoiding domestic flights. We try to organise sightseeing programmes to avoid unnecessary driving and repeated routes where practical. Guests are encouraged to walk in areas such as Old Cairo, Luxor East Bank and local streets in Aswan whenever practical, allowing them to explore neighbourhoods more closely.

Our guides try to brief travellers at the start of the trip on responsible behaviour, including reducing single-use plastics, using refillable water bottles, disposing of waste properly and respecting cultural and historical sites. Where possible, we try to use local products and services for meals and activities, helping travellers experience local life and support businesses in the places they visit.

Hotels and local service providers are selected based on the needs of the itinerary and availability. Where practical, we try to work with partners that use measures such as energy-saving lighting, water conservation and recycling. This can give travellers practical ways to be more mindful of resource use during their holiday while exploring Egypt’s main cultural sites.

People

Local people are an important part of this journey and help deliver the travel experience. Our guides, drivers and support staff are Egyptian professionals who live and work in the regions visited, helping travellers connect with local people and services.

We try to work with local accommodation, transport services, restaurants and other suppliers, particularly in Aswan and Luxor. Guests are encouraged to engage respectfully with artisans, market sellers, café owners and local neighbourhoods, giving them opportunities to meet people and experience everyday life beyond the main attractions.
