Exploring the mountains on foot:
Snowshoeing is a human-powered activity that allows guests to travel through the winter mountains without using ski lifts or motorised equipment while walking. This hut-to-hut itinerary connects mountain refuges on foot, with no daily vehicle transfers between accommodation.

Staying in mountain refuges:
Accommodation is provided in two traditional mountain refuges in the Clarée Valley. These are relatively simple places to stay, where water, heating and electricity are valuable resources. Guests are encouraged to use these facilities thoughtfully and respect the practical constraints of life in remote mountain accommodation.

Travelling by train:
We encourage guests to reach the Southern French Alps by train wherever possible. Return transfers between Briançon and Névache are included, so guests do not need to hire a car for the holiday.

Digital travel information:
We provide itineraries, kit lists and practical holiday information through our smartphone app, reducing the need for printed travel documents.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

This holiday takes place in the Clarée Valley, known for its traditional mountain villages, forests, alpine meadows and winter landscapes. The valley is subject to environmental and planning protections that help preserve its natural and cultural heritage.

Respecting mountain wildlife:
Your qualified local mountain guide chooses routes according to snow conditions, avalanche risk and the group's ability, while taking account of sensitive natural areas where appropriate.

Throughout the journey, guests are encouraged to respect wildlife, avoid approaching animals, take all litter away and follow the guide's advice when travelling through winter habitats.

The small-group format allows your guide to share knowledge about the local environment and explain how wildlife adapts to the challenges of winter.

Supporting nature restoration:
We contribute to rewilding and biodiversity restoration projects through our partner Mossy Earth on behalf of our guests. These contributions support conservation initiatives beyond the immediate destination and are not presented as compensation for the holiday's emissions.

People

Mountain refuges are an important part of life in the French Alps, providing shelter and hospitality for walkers, climbers and other mountain visitors.

During this holiday, guests stay in independently operated refuges and meet the people who manage them, gaining an insight into the realities of living and working in a remote mountain environment.

Your local guide also shares knowledge of the Clarée Valley's history, traditions and mountain culture, helping guests better understand the communities that have shaped the landscape.

We work with qualified local mountain guides and independent accommodation providers, paying agreed professional rates for their services and expertise.

No previous snowshoeing experience is required, but participants should have a good level of fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours in snow, carrying their own backpack between refuges. We are happy to discuss individual requirements and help travellers assess whether the holiday is suitable for them.
