Java
This densely populated island contains many towering volcanoes, ancient temples and peaceful pockets beyond its megacities.

Our Indonesia travel guide aims to point responsible travellers in the right direction when it comes to what we rate & what we don’t.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

CARBON REDUCTION

Java is a large island with a lot of distance to cover between places. This is why we prioritise travelling by train wherever possible, reducing the need for internal flights while allowing travellers to experience the changing landscapes properly from cities to rural villages to volcanic regions.

We have streamlined our itinerary to avoid any unnecessary backtracking and to offer our guests the chance to move through the island intentionally and learn about Indonesia’s rich history from Indonesians themselves. We walk through cultural centres like Yogyakarta or when we navigate temple complexes and local neighbourhoods, reducing reliance on vehicles wherever possible.

Small group sizes (maximum 15 people) keep the footprint lower and allow for more flexible, efficient transport. We also encourage travellers to take responsibility for their own impact by packing consciously, reducing waste, and engaging with the journey in a more considered way.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Java is defined by its landscapes of volcanoes, rice fields, forests, and coastlines. This tour is built to experience those environments without overwhelming them. From sunrise at volcanic viewpoints to visits to rural and agricultural regions, we focus on presence over impact.

We operate with a consistent ‘leave no trace’ approach across natural sites. That means respecting trails, minimising waste, and avoiding disruption to ecosystems, whether in mountain regions, near waterfalls, or in agricultural landscapes. Java’s environments are not backdrops; they are active, lived-in spaces that require care.

Indonesian guides provide context on how these landscapes shape daily life, from farming systems to the cultural and spiritual significance of places like Borobudur and other historic sites.

LOCAL ECONOMY

This tour is designed so that the money spent on tourism stays local. We work directly with Indonesian guides, drivers, small hotels, and independent restaurants throughout Java and avoid large chains and external operators.

You’ll experience local food, visit markets, and engage with small businesses that reflect the diversity of the island, from urban centres to rural communities. Java is Indonesia’s cultural and economic heart, and this journey is built to support that ecosystem at a local level rather than extract from it

Small group travel allows us to work with smaller, community-owned providers who benefit less from mass tourism.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

This is an Indonesian-led experience. Your guides aren’t just facilitators; they’re part of the story, bringing context to Java’s layered identity shaped by religion, history, and modern change.

Throughout the journey, you’ll engage with community perspectives, whether through cultural experiences, conversations, or time spent in communities beyond the main tourist track. This tour is grounded in real life, and they require curiosity, awareness, and respect.

We keep groups small to ensure these exchanges remain meaningful and not intrusive. Clear guidance is given on cultural norms, particularly when visiting religious sites and traditional communities.
