CARBON REDUCTION

This volunteering programme is designed as a long-stay, in-country conservation experience, reducing the need for repeated travel and supporting deeper, lower-impact engagement with one destination.

All activities are conducted locally within Zambia, primarily in and around Lusaka and Kafue National Park, avoiding internal flights and keeping transport distances relatively contained. Travel between sites is conducted in shared ground transport, reducing per-person emissions.

Daily work is predominantly outdoors and human-powered, including field tracking, walking surveys, and observational research, which significantly reduces reliance on high-carbon infrastructure or mechanised activity.

Accommodation at both project sites is basic and locally operated, with limited energy consumption and minimal infrastructure, helping to reduce overall resource use. Electricity access is restricted and used primarily for essential operations.

Meals are provided on-site, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients, supporting regional food systems and reducing food transport emissions. Vegetarian options are available throughout the programme.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

This programme directly supports elephant conservation and wider ecosystem protection in Zambia through data collection, rehabilitation support, and long-term rewilding initiatives.

Volunteers contribute to non-invasive wildlife research, including elephant behaviour monitoring, biodiversity surveys, and habitat assessments. All elephant interactions follow a strict hands-off policy, ensuring ethical wildlife protection standards are maintained at all times.

The project supports the rehabilitation and reintroduction of orphaned elephants, with individuals gradually reintegrated into natural habitats within Kafue National Park. This contributes to long-term species recovery and ecosystem balance.
Work also supports broader conservation goals such as anti-poaching awareness, habitat protection, and wildlife monitoring, helping strengthen protection efforts in vulnerable protected areas.

Environmental education and research activities help build long-term conservation capacity, ensuring that knowledge gained on the project contributes to ongoing protection efforts beyond the duration of the volunteer stay.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

This programme supports the local economy through partnerships with Zambian-based conservation organisations, staff, and facilities in both Lusaka and Kafue National Park.

Local guides, researchers, and conservation staff are employed across all project sites, ensuring that tourism and volunteer funding directly support local employment and skill development.

Volunteers also engage with local community initiatives, including schools, women’s groups, and clinics, helping to channel resources and attention into community-led development projects.

The project’s structure ensures that conservation funding remains within Zambia, supporting both wildlife protection and surrounding communities.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

The majority of staff involved in the programme are Zambian nationals, including conservation officers, researchers, camp staff, and community coordinators with additional international support staff.

The project actively creates employment and training opportunities in conservation and research fields, helping build local capacity in wildlife monitoring, anti-poaching, and community engagement.

Community outreach initiatives support inclusive participation, particularly through education programmes, women’s empowerment groups, and healthcare-related volunteer activities.

All staff are employed in accordance with local labour standards, and the programme promotes an inclusive environment for both international volunteers and local team members.

The project is open to volunteers of diverse backgrounds and fosters a collaborative, respectful, and cross-cultural working environment.
