CARBON REDUCTION

tuktukrental.com offers a fleet of both petrol-fueled and electric (e-tuks) vehicles. As a result of our investment in the e-tuk sector, we have achieved a reduction of 20.8 tonnes of CO2 emissions in Sri Lanka.

Traveling in a tuktuk is significantly more carbon-efficient than other modes of transportation such as a car or coach. It is 44% more carbon-efficient than traveling in a car, 64% more efficient than traveling on a shared motor coach bus, and 90% more efficient than traveling on an airplane. Self-driving a tuktuk enables travelers to explore off-the-beaten-path areas, which contributes to reducing overall tourism industry emissions. Independent travel allows for wider and more immersive exploration. Our travel app features a curated list of off-the-beaten-path destinations, attractions, and experiences, prioritizing options like nature walks and on-foot exploration based on customer preference.

tuktukrental.com, Sri Lanka, offsets its carbon emissions through the purchase and neutralization of carbon credits. The 'Podi' (Sinhalese for 'small') Carbon Project, powered by tuktukrental.com, connects travelers with island-wide, community-based scientific reforestation programs to negate their comparatively small carbon footprint.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

While we do not directly fund specific environmental causes, we recognize that Sri Lanka and Cambodia are ecologically rich and diverse countries with a lot to offer a wildlife enthusiast. We offer complimentary trip-planning sessions both before and after sales to help travelers design their self-drive journeys. We advocate for visiting lesser-known national parks and provide guidance on responsible wildlife encounters. We consistently encourage our customers to adopt low- or no-impact travel practices.

We partner with environmental protection and preservation organizations such as Planet Protectors and Zero Plastic Movement.

People

PEOPLE

Local Economy

Our entire fleet of tuks is owned by local proprietors across the island, providing a vital source of higher income for a vulnerable social segment. This model encourages tuk suppliers to diversify their income sources, thereby enhancing labor efficiency and significantly supporting household socio-economics. With 22% of tuks owned by women, we directly contribute to improved socio-economic indicators related to health, nutrition, education, savings, and investment.

By design, the tuktuk facilitates slow travel, allowing passengers to drive through the country's rural areas. The average traveler makes 2–3 stops per day, increasing tourism revenue injected directly into local economies that might otherwise be overlooked in traditional tourism value chains.

Employment, Inclusivity, and Diversity

The organization has created 90 jobs for local communities. One hundred percent of our employees are local nationals, ensuring our business operations are localized and grounded in the realities of the home country. In Sri Lanka, 18.8% of our employees are female, nearly double the employment data for women in the country's wider tourism industry. Our salaried team earns above the minimum wage, benefiting from health insurance and complimentary nutritious lunch at the office. We foster an inclusive workspace that celebrates diverse identities, ethnicities, and cultures.

Our ecosystem includes a network of country-wide mechanical partners and part-time train/trail transfer officers, all of whom generate income and benefit from the tourism value chain we create.

Through a dedication to carbon reduction, environmental stewardship, and robust support for local communities and economies, tuktukrental.com ensures that every journey genuinely gives back.
